Most of the time, 4-channel setup is front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right.  Games that produce surround sound will support this.

by: kiranghagPosted on 2004-03-10 at 20:46:25ID: 10567749

well, 4 channel is obviously with 4 speakers.

or maybe i was not clear with the question...i'll try to restate it...

my onboard sound card supports AC97 and motherboard box states it as 4 channel supported.
output jacks provided on the rear are lineout, linein, and mic...
the existing 2.1 speakers utilise the lineout...
now where do i connect the 2nd set of the speakers...
do i have to buy something like 4.1 speaker system or i can just put 2 more speakers somehow...??

TIA

yes  kiranghag ... you just plug the other jack in the MIC output. Some AC97 sound systems allow you even to do a 5.1 output using the all three jacks as all will act as outputs and you'll have no input then. This however is made through drivers and your driver HAS to have this option. Just dig in the sound options . You are a certified expert here, I guess there's no need for me to find such a computer around right now to point you exactly where the option is  ;-)   I'm sure you'll handle it.

I just checked .... in control panel -> sound -> the first tab is "volume" and here, lower in the window you'll find a "speakers" section with an "advanced" button and there you can select how many speakers you have and windows will modify the way audio I/O ports will act. That's an AC97 that can do 5.1 , but I guess yours should have something like this menu too.

best regards

advanced button as well as menu option is grayed out on my system.
maybe i need to hunt for an driver update...

you do that :)

Soundcards that support multichannel output usually have extra jacks for the other speakers.  For example: http://www.nisis.com/Products/SoundCards/4CH-SC.asp (note the black jack near the bottom).  I haven't heard about using the mic jack for output.

:-)    gotcha on this one Callandor
I'm using it at home and work too on a Gigabyte and an Asus mobo, so as far as I'm concerned I'm quite sure what I'm speakin' about. Indeed, extra jacks are present in lots of cases, but at least some of the AC97 sound systems use it like this.

you have to conect the rear spks in the line in jack, and when you simple disable the line in on the volume control it function as a rear spks out.

is there any documentation/link about this...this certainly must have come from somewhere...

meanwhile i m yet to try all this...

Check www.driverguide.com for an updated driver. If the driver disk (or CD) is the one that you installed from, or if this is an integrated sound (on your motherboard) then check the driver CD for the motherboard, don't just assume that Windows finds and installs the best thing by itself. I use a C-media that has an extended bundled program that I can access through the quick launch or control panel. Check your control panel if there is some similar configuration program. You can then change the line-in (or microphone) to a second set of speakers.

Hope this helps.

If you go into the advanced TAB in the volume control it should give you the option to change the MIC/LINE IN(cant remember which) to REAR speakers

Hope this helps
