Question

PCI Multimedia Device

Asked by: pjweyerman

I have installed the sound card drivers and my sound works fine.  I am working on a Dell Dimension XPS R450.  Also, went to dell to read and research. Found the drivers for this on board sound at drivers.com  However, this PCI multimedia audio device in Device Manager will not go away?  I have tried everything.  Any suggestions? pamela

OK, PJ, you are going to need to provide a little more in depth info if the solution is not simple :)

The first thing to do is go to your Desktop and right click My Computer --> Choose Properties --> Device Manger tab (assuming you are Win98, and from the model, that's a safe bet) --> click on Sound, Video and Game Controllers --> right click the offending PCI multimedia audio device you mention, and click remove/delete choice.

This should take care of most situations. Since you are here, it may be that you have already done this without success. That is where we are going to need further info. You said that you have the right drivers, and sound is functional. What device is it that you want to remove? Give me as much info on the device, and I will do my best to help!

Pamela, Hello

Boot into safe mode by pressing F8 as your PC is trying to boot up, choose safe mode and log on as normal, now as this is XP goto start right click My comp~/properties and then hardware and now click on device manager and try to uninstall the PCI media device, it should work in safe mode.

Do you get an error when you try to remove it?

ChrisP and Huseyin1:

Huseyin1 your suggestion did not work.  I apologize for not getting back to both of you as I have been swamped. It was not my intention, and again I apologize.  I will say this the PCI Multimedia Device that continues to show is under the "Other Devices" category.  I did not say this last time.

I want to continue working with you ChrisPY, however, it will still be a while before I get back to that particular computer as I am working on about 10 right now and I keep going back and forth.

Please let me know if this is acceptable with you and this site as I am new.  Thanks
pjweyerman

No problem, take as much time as you need. I had been swamped myself, and let my Yahoo mailbox overflow, so decided to go through all of the questions I had commented on and see how they were doing. No apology needed!

For next time, did you try my removal solution above without success? And 'Other Devices' is often where these things reside, basically the computer is saying, 'there's a device, I know it's a device, but heck if I know WHAT device!' Often it is sound cards, NICs, or combos that are not from the more major manufacturers.

Also, what level are you at? Are you a tech pro, or stuck doing the tech work at a non-profit or for friens? I ask both to know what level I need to speak from, and also so that I can adjust some of my instructions. For instance, if the easy way didn't work, we should probably list and identify all of your PCI devices, sound card, modem, NIC, etc. Unless you can figure out what hardware is installed, and what is not showing in windows and not working, and determine the offending device by process of elimination, and then identify it. Once we have it ID'd, we'll try and find the drivers.

It almost sounds as if you have another device on board that has sound capabilities. It could be something like a modem, a video capture card or something else. If you say that under the device manager, you can see, under sound, video and game controllers (control panel - setting - (for xp, hardware, device manager), yet there is still an undentified audio PCI present that Windows doesn't know what it is, then start searching for other things. Unplug the modem and see if it's still there. Look for another PCI device that might want to acquire sound. Check the back of your computer for any device that might have an audio input (like an RCA connector that you would see on the back of a VCR, or a headphone socket). If you see something like this, then it's almost certain you have another device that can accept an input and either Windows is guessing that it's an audio device, or that it is an audio device.
