Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. DVD-RW and CD-RW are blank under WinXP

Hi Experts,

Over the weekend I updated my system to run on WinXP (Long time overdue!) Having backed up all my data on DVD-RW and DVD-R I proceeded to install to OS. However upon trying to load my data back from the backups some of the discs had read errors and one in particular could not be read from at all!

I experienced no errors whilst writing the discs and tested them on the old OS (Win2000, just read a few random files). The discs are good quality (Datasafe brand using Ritek inks) and the DVD drive is a Pioneer 107D with v1.12 firmware (Updated it to 1.13 after the upgrade).

What I find peculiar is this, the discs that read partially ok were –RW but it was their first write, whereas the disk that I cant read had been erased once before. I have a DVD-ROM drive as well but this refuses to read it also (And indeed refuses to read CD-RW as well).

WinXP reports that the disc is blank, but upon further querying it has a 2.4Gb RAW formatted area on the disc (This is found from the hardware properties dialogue box). My DVD authoring software (Roxio 6 Platinum) reports that the disc is not blank, but refuses to load the contents. I attempted to copy the disc but Roxio claims it is “Protected”.

One other curiosity I have noticed is a CD-RW showed the same symptoms (Blank contents when loaded by XP), this disc I tried in another machine and it works perfectly (Unfortunately I cant do the same with the DVD-RW as I have no other PC with drives capable of reading one), however on retrying it in the PC in question the CD-RW read perfectly.

Any help resoling this would be much appreciated as years of data may be lost as a result of this.
