Question

Cannot load XP onto SATA HDD using Silicon Image 3112 controller

Asked by: sibly4

Present configuration:

     Matsonic MS9337C+ Motherboard – P4 2.53Ghz 512Mb RAM
40Gb Western Digital 8Mb cache HDD
GeForce FX5200 DVI & TV out Graphics
     SoundBlaster Digital Sound
     Liteon DVDRW
     Liteon CDRW
     Liteon DVD ROM
     Sony FDD
     Trust V92 56k Modem
     Windows XP Home SP1

I have bought and fitted a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 80Gb SATA HDD and an Antec 480w PSU(to cope with the extra power consumption). I want to use the SATA HDD as my main drive and then format the IDE HDD to use as a storage drive.
The main bios does not see the SATA drive although it is seen in P.O.S.T. and in the RAID bios. No changes can be made in the RAID bios.
I have now unplugged the IDE HDD and am trying to install XP on the SATA drive.
I have selected boot from CDROM which is the XP disc and the screen just goes blank for about 2-3 minutes. It then says that Setup is looking at current settings. The screen then goes blank again for at least 15 minutes until eventually the CDROM kicks into life and setup starts. I then press F6 to install the latest Silicon Image 3112 controller drivers from the floppy drive (E-mailed to me from the Motherboard manufacturers). I select to install drivers from floppy by pressing "S" and the floppy drive is read. The PC then just hangs indefinitely saying Windows Setup is now starting. The SATA HDD is spinning as it is getting warm.
I previously tried using earlier drivers for the controller, the same symptoms occured but it went a bit further and setup said that it could find no HDD to install Windows into.

Make sure that the SATA chipset is set to BASE mode in the BIOS, and not RAID mode.

Also, ensure that the disk is connected to the first SATA port on the motherboard.

One more thing, are you powering the SATA disk with a molex connector, or the proper SATA power connector?
(I remember that the maxtor drives have both connections).

Try unplugging all your optical drives except the DVD-rom on one IDE cable then try installing.

The option to change your SATA chipset should be under something like "'Integrated Peripherals" in your BIOS.

'Serial ATA Function' should have 'BASE' next to it (this is what it looks like in my BIOS anyway - I have the Sil 3112 chipset as well).

You can get the very latest drivers from Silicone Image, from here:
http://www.siliconimage.com/home.asp

Type 'drivers' in the search box. In the new window that opens, click the 'Downloads' folder, then 'Drivers'. Next click on 'Sil3x12', then finally click on
"SiI3x12: Serial ATA (SATA) Windows IDE Driver - Released".
On the right-hand side there is a link to a zip file (3112A_x86_win_idvr-11052_logo.zip) containing the drivers you need to put on the floppy disk.

I oppoligise for the long list of instructions, but links to their files/pages don't last long! :o)

Hope this helps! :o)
