I have had a problem with my computer freezing for several months now, and managed to ignore it quite successfully up until now.
When I say freezing, I mean everything stops. The mouse doesn't move anymore etc. I have to hardboot it to get it up and running again. I have tried to see a pattern on when it freezes, but am having trouble pin-pointing much. It has happened while doing nothing but typing an e-mail, while watching an .avi movie file, or while writing CD's. All sorts of things. One thing that seems to be quite common is whenever I have attempted to convert an .avi file to VCD it freezes every single time. Which led me to believe it was the RAM. (there has never been a problem converting mpg's to VCD though). Also when I am about to write a DVD it freezes every time, and if I try and run "chapter detection" before writing the DVD.
I thought it seemed to be happening more in hot, humid weather. It's winter in New Zealand now and admittedly it hasn't happened as often. But yesterday I had the sides off, it was freezing cold, and it still happened several times. The fan seems to be going OK, and it has a big old heatsink installed too. Yesterday I downloaded a bunch of things from my video camera and was trying to save it as an .mpg file when it froze. It worked when I saved it as an avi though. So although it seems to happen mainly when I am writing CD's/DVD's, it's not exclusive to this activity - it's just that I do those activities more than anything else I think!
So things I have tried so far:
flashing the bios to the latest version
running RAM diagnostics
running CPU diagnostics
opening the sides to make sure it's not overheating
error checking the HDD
changing the IDE cable
turning off all hardware acceleration
I cringe to say this, but it all seemed to start around about the time I installed a new CDRW. I pulled the HDD out in order to get the CDRW installed, and accidentally rested it upside down while I checked everything was working(I know, I'm a dummy). I turned the computer on to test it out and it turned itself off quite soon after booting. Which is when I noticed I had the HDD sitting upside down. So my initial thought was that I'd done something to the HDD. I've run error checking though and it seems OK. So the other thought was that it might be the CDRW I had just installed. But yesterday I removed it, and I'm still having the problems. My boyfriend seems to think it might have something to do with the CDRW messing up the IDE bus...??
My computer (desktop):
XP Home
AMD 2000
512mb RAM
2 x HDD, 1x80GB, 1x160GB (i only just installed the 160GB one yesterday)
Up until yesterday I had a CDRW/DVD rom & a regular CD-ROM. I have since removed both of these and replaced them with a DVD/CDRW writer.
So, errrr..... help!!!!
