I am trying to install a new HDD for a customer on his lappy. its a DELL C family (really old). the new HDD is a seagate 20 gig. when installed the lappy cant see it, so I slaved it to my PC viz a USB convertor that I use for other lappy HDD, and they work fine, but this HDD is not working, I get a code 10 error in device manager!
I have seen lots of solutions on the web, but none work. my PC is XP pro SP1.

Usually the error code 10 is due to a faulty/conflicting IRQ, check http://www.socketcom.com/s upport/not e_Error10. htm for more information.
Also, if the HDD has NTFS that means that you can't see if in DOS (But you already know that).
Try changing the IDE channel, without any other devices, and set the new HDD as Master and see if this helps.
