Question

Need help with A7N8X BIOS settings

Asked by: hmiller8513

Hello,
I have an A7N8X Deluxe r1.04 with a freshly updated 1008 BIOS. I am upgrading the system from an Athlon 2100+ to an Athlon 3000+ (400mhz). In BIOS, I set the frequency to 200 and multiplier to 10.5 for the new chip.

I initially got the system to boot recognize the CPU as a 3000+. So far so good. The OS worked great, but had direct 3D stability problems.

I've updated my nforce drivers and geforce drivers. When that didn't work, I upgraded the video card (from ti4600 to 5700LE) and eventually resorted to a fresh install of Windows XP. All this and the 3D stablity problem remains.

Realizing I had pc2700 RAM (2 sticks of 512) and the RAM was not at the same speed as the FSB, I figured this was the cause of the problem. I swapped this out for 2 sticks of pc3200. I set the memory frequency to 100% to sync the RAM and FSB to a speed of 200. I still have instability running 3D applications.

After many hours of trying various combination of settings for CPU External Freq, CPU Frequency Multiple, memory frequency, etc... I decided to try running with the 2100+ chip I started with. I am now unstable with this chip (set at 133x10.5 in BIOS).  I've tried it with both the pc2700 and pc3200 RAM.

Ultimately I'd like to have the 3000+ cpu running smoothly witht he 5700LE graphics card.

I'm not terribly concerned with overclocking (At this point, I'll be happy to underclock the 3000+ to get this thing working again) - I just want a stable system. Can anyone help with BIOS settings for an A7N8X Deluxe with either a 2100+ or 3000+ (400mhz) or provide any suggestions to get my machine working again?
Thanks!

You did not get the wrong bios update by any chance did you? There is a update 1008_D for Rev. 2.0 and what you need is AN8D1008.zip for your Rev. 1.4.

Miller~

I also have this motherboard but I am running a 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ without any stability issues.  I would concider reloading the default setting in the BIOS if you have not already tried it.  You may inadvertantly changed a setting...it happens to the best of us.

I did have some problems when I has both the AGP and FSB Spread Spectrum enabled.  Once I disabled them I can run prime95 for days w/o an error.

If you have an old PCI video card or a built in card you could always remove your AGP card and see if it is an AGP setting.

If you type all of your BIOS settings I would be more than happy to look over them for you and to compare them with mine.  Good luck and let us know if anything changes.

Cya,

Joe

I once used one of these (actually I think it had the -X extension) to build a system for a friend; it was a very low-end system, having a Radeon 7000 compatible card for video. The memory was 1x512MB of the fast variety. I found out by trial and error, that the video card and the motherboard were incompatible: When I switched to an nVidia, it began to work, although the board+ATI Radeon compatible had been sold to the guy as 'definitely compatible, we've tested it here'.

I measured the board and found out that the timing was altered after addition of that video card so that the memory would not get sufficiently wide pulses for refresh (well that was the effect; the two were in wrong sync), thus causing the memory to fail.
The results were rather extreme, I got the same speed problem all the time and the whole thing would fail just after exiting from BIOS setup.

Try changing your video card to something else (not permanently, only to verify the cause), and test that first. If even that fails, take the CPU and memory speeds down drastically and try again. It might be that the 3D mode in your card alters the bus timing.

I've read about symptoms with the same board elsewhere too, so maybe it is just a board very susceptible to timing issues.

I did grab the correct BIOS - but did double check to make sure I got the one for the rev 1.04 board.  As some of the settings I've tried throughout the last few days hung my machine before POST, clearing the BIOS via the CMOS jumper was my only way to get moving again - so I've had several "fresh starts" on my BIOS settings.

I've swapped video cards between a ti4600 and a 5700LE... didn't seem to make a difference regarding the issues I was having.

Right now, I've reverted back to the 2100+, the pc2700 RAM, and ti4600 card - which is where I started.  The machine is running fairly stable, though 3D performance seems to decline over time.  Perhaps a heat issue?  I used silver compound when I put the 2100+ back in and have not gone over 49c under load.

I'm actually leaning towards a new motherboard for the 3000+... $80 or so seems reasonable compared to the time I've already spent troubleshooting - and hopefully I can use the machines instead of frustratedly tinkering with them.

I think changing the motherboard is a good idea.
I've had good experiences with MSI boards.

Hopefully a new board will fix your issues but I would like to add that ASUS is an awesome company and as far as a motherbaord goes for an Athlon XP chip, especially if you are going to overclock it at all, the A7N8X deluxe is a great choice.
I have had mine for a 1 1/2 years with rock solid performance even while overclocking and having my Vcore settings raised just a hair.

By default I think that the spread spectrums are enabled so if you haven't already double check them I would just to rule that out.

Also how are you identifying your problem as a video error.

Good luck and my vote if for another ASUS board...lol

If you think it might be a heat problem try taking the side of the case off and placing a fan blowing air into the case. You may just need to add more fans to the case to keep it cool. I like at least one fan in the lower front and two in the upper part of the back of the case, the bigger the better. Adding a snorkle tube on the side of the case for the processor get it's air from outside of the case is a good thing too.

I had a machine that had lockup problems where it would lock pre, during, or after the post.  sometimes after fifteen days of running.  Tracked it down to small power fluctuations.  Recomend a True Power power supply, especially if you feel like overclocking or adding drives in the future.  Antec has a sweet 550W true Power.

I've read a lot lately about many Asus boards having issues with a 400 MHz FSB.

A7N8X (both versions) Have a lots of "Issues" (The list I looked at had 23 to be exact) specifically with the BIOS and they are known to have voltage regulation problems. (The voltage regulators on the board itself.)

~ Asus used to mean quality but you now have to consider that Asus and PC-Chips are now partners. What comes from where?? Who knows!!

Here are some reported A7N8X issues that might be relivant to you::

4. Weak AGP drive output voltage at higher FSB's (GFX glitches/lock-ups/drop to desktop and system re-boots in 3D apps & games)

5. Insufficient chipset voltage. (PCB modification is the only fix at this time.)  *Can help with items 7, and 4*

7. Inadequate support for 200/400MHz Barton CPU. (Updated BIOS supposedly fixes but reports indicate it's un-successful in some cases.)

8. Board insatbility when using ASYNC memory settings + & -

13. BIOS not properly reading SPD's on latest official Intel/JEDEC DDR 400 memory modules (Confirmed by OCZ, Crucial and Corsair)

15. Case/Chassis temperature reported incorrectly (Often higher than the CPU temperature and/or much lower than the real temps.)

19. Data curruption when using built-in Sillicon Image SATA Controller *This is claimed to be fixed with BIOS 1005 for v2.xx (only) motherboards. It's not confirmed effective.

23. Spread Spectrum will not always disable when user selects 100/133/166/200MHz FSB's. Can cause instability in some systems if enabled.

~~ I know you don't wanna hear it but basically you have a glitchy board..

Ultimately, the problem turned out to be the new 3000+ processor...  (Though the A7N8X had stability problems running at a 400 FSB.)  Putting the processor in a new board produced the same graphics glitches...  I swapped the chip and all is well.  Thanks to all who followed this thread.
