Question

IDE HDD Not Recognized by Windows

Asked by: valekhawke

I am pretty sure of the answer to this question but I wanted to throw it out there for any other suggestions. I have a Maxtor HDD that, when connected to the system, WinXP Pro, is recognized by the BIOS but not recognized in My Computer or Disk Management. I have refreshed MC and rescanned drives in DM countless times. I am certain the jumper settings are correct for the role of the drive. I have booted the system with ERD Commander and it is still not recognized in their Environment. I have removed the drive from the IDE Channel and connected it with a USB adapter. When I connect it with the USB adapter Windows recognizes the drive as being connected and identifies it correctly as a Maxtor Drive. The drive shows up in Device Manager with no bangs and Device Manager says that the drive is working properly. However, still no joy in My Computer or Disk Management. I can also "safely stop" the USB Device and Windows will tell me that it is now safe to remove the drive. Everything about this drive seems absolutely normal except that I cannot access the data that I need off of this drive. I accept that things have a mechanical life and that this drive has probably reached the end of its life cycle but it would seem that it would not show every sign of life or normalcy except not showing up in my computer or disk management. I have tried the same things on two different computers with the same results.

Verify the MoBo's BIOS is detecting and setting the drive as LBA mode..

If it won't do it in Auto then manually set it to LBA mode.
You may have to re-partition and re-format *in* LBA mode to get the OS to see it.

This is a glitch I've noticed in some newer BIOS's lately..
They Auto install some drives as CHS mode for some reason which is wrong.

Youve ruled out all but the jumpers by trying it in both places, some only use one jumper, others use 2 jumpers per drive, perhaps ones fallen off?  Its a very unlikely scenario but its all I can think of.  Itll be on a sticker at the back of the drive.  Otherwise, if you have tried it in both places and you set the jumpers correctly each time (master when on the usb) then it is probably a gonner.

If your data is critical, it can probably be rescued if you can get an exact same model drive with the same firmware.  A majority of drive faliures are in the (easily replacable) logic board and not the mechanical internals.

Either no partition information on the drive or possible mismatch between fat32 and ntfs patitions. I would suggest downloading Maxtor's "Powermax" diagnostic tool and examining the drive via a bootable diskette constructed from the download. Follow the instructions carefully, some of the processes can be data destructive. If the drive is faulty, an error code will be generated. Record the code, if the drive remains under warranty, the code is used to generate an approved RMA and the drive will be replaced by Maxtor. Refer to Maxtor for detailed info.

As it is a MAXTOR Drive I believe that MadAd1 may be on the right track. I'll have to check my parts storage and see if I have another Logic Board that is Identical to the one I've got.

Got one with the same problems, still don't know the cause, but some techies said the DMA chips is dead. Running it without DMA would make it come back to life, never try though. And I don't think Maxtor use a 2 jumpers configuration.

by: valekhawkePosted on 2005-01-03 at 17:59:41ID: 12949059

Which may also be cured if I find a different logic board. Hopefully we'll know something tomorrow.

Try running Maxtor's diagnostic program (PowerMax) http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.8db0c3d6932ced37294198b091346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads It may at least confirm your fears that it's stuffed!

ok.. first thing.. normally, on maxtor drives, if are trying to attach a new drive, to windows XP, chances NOT to be detected is high. This is one of the maxtor's prob. To make it able to be detected, u should try to format and repartition it. after the 2 processed done, finally, it'll able to be detected on the system.

Maybe I should qualify something - The drive was working fine in another computer and then one day it just quit and that is why I am working with it now. There is data on it that if possible to recover I would like to so re-partition and reformat is a last resort.

Do you remember what file system was on the drive (FAT32 or NTFS)?  Is it possible there was some sort of disk manager on the drive?  On Maxtor drives there is usually only one jumper (J50) which needs to be on for master or off for slave.  Can you use a boot floppy to verify if the drive can be seen.  Boot a 98/ME floppy and type dir driveletter (where driveletter = c: for master or d: for slave), then try fdisk and see if the drive shows up.  If there is a disk manager on the drive it needs to be set as master and you must boot the drive for the OS to see it.  Here's Maxtor's download area

If your running windows xp and have your system drive (C:) formatted as a FAT32 Partition,
you are unable to read information stored under a NTFS partition. This is a common fault.

Hope i have been of assistance
