Question

SONY VAIO PCG-R505JSK FAILS AT BOOTUP

Asked by: Lil

Hello,

When I try to boot up my SONY VAIO R505JSK notebook, right after the HD starts spinning, I get the following error:

 TRAP 00000003
DEBUG TRAP
 cs:eip=0008:004072B4  ss:esp=0010:00060E94  errcode=0000

 edi=004037FB  esi=00000006  ebp=00000000 cr0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000

Needless to say after this the computer is unresponsive to input attempts, does not continue to boot andf I don't hear the HD spinning anymore, nor do I see activity on the HD LCD. This problem started with the computer suddenly rebooting on it's own. No problems detected before. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,Lil

I am running Windows XP, it does not get past the first spin of the h/d, cannot boot to safe mode. I think I've trouble-shooted it to a probable corruption in the C drive, since the computer boots up fine to a bootable floppy or CD. Unfortunaltely it's display does not seem to agree with the Knoppix Live CD I have, so I cannot just boot it, salvage everything from the D drive (extended partition) and wipe out the whole thing. BTW, I am also running DeepFreeze STD, and it was in frozen mode for the C drive which might make things more complcated.
Thanks,Lil

OUCH, sounds like Deep Freeze is trying to restore, or was recording for restoration after next reboot, ran out of space, and choked, either that, or the HDD controller died, Pop in your windows CD, and try a Repair install, or use recovery console, this would get you back into windows (it should overwrite DeepFreeze) then backup your Data, and perform a clean install of XP

Guys,

The problem was a corrupted C drive. Luckily, I have been able to restore/re-build the C drive without losing anything on my D (logical) drive, which contained all my data. There comes the benefits of running only the operating system and system-dependent installed programs on the C drive. As to the culprit, it might have been a video/dvd-editing program I've installed and ran, which apparently needed far more resources than I had available. I think it filled the disk with temporary data and somehow interfered with DeepFreeze which ultimately caused the drive to become corrupted.
I would like to close this question, and thank all of you for getting involved. Dan, I will accept your answer with my thanks, especially for the great links, and Onedeej, I would like to offer you and assisted acceptance, since DeepFreeze would have been the one thing I would not have thought. To make things easier in the future, I now have it installed with the command line option enabled.

Thanks and BRGDS,
Lil

Thank you for the points, and I am glad I could help, I did some work for a college near me, and they use Deep Freeze to make sure students dont corrupt the system, or delete things they shouldn't, it was explained to me that Deep Freeze logs everything that changes on the drive, and at the next boot it will restore everything back to operating condition, I immidiately thought this would significantly reduce disk space, and wondered why, if this thing were installed on all the computers throughout the campus, were we dealing with the headache of a virus outbreak, apparently Deep Freeze isnt all that it is said to be, Oh how do I long for the perfect software!

by: LilPosted on 2005-03-03 at 21:58:24ID: 13456390

LOL - I guess we'll never find that perfect software! I think the older version of DF was somehow stronger, and also it somehow restored the h/d on power-off, so you could not "tinker" with it much. Once the juice was cut, mostly everything was back to status-quo. Now since Faronics took over, it is a bit more commercial and less powerful, not at all that "unbreakable" as it was. Oh well. I still love it though.

Thanks again for all Your help.
Brgds,
Lil
