Question

UPS Experts: need a recommendation.

Asked by: newyorkny

I need a cost-effective UPS solution for several of the following machines:

Netserver E-50 (a PII.33Mhz Tower) that maintain critical functions, such as firewall.

I require graceful shutdown, but nothing fancy past that.  Lower-price is good.  The ones we have now are Non-rackmountable, and that's fine.

I have no prejudice for or against any manufacturer.

THANKS!

Sorry - I should have made clear.

I need a suggestion for a UPS 1 for each Netserver.

In other words, each Netserver has its own UPS.

I guess that goes without saying, but I said it anyway! :L

I recommend APC SmartUPS devices, for their sine wave output, controlled shutdown and monitoring software: http://www.apc.com/  You probably don't need a very large unit, depending on your total draw and how long you need it up after power fails.

We have several of their UPSStation GTX models and they are very good...

APC is a good brand. I have a couple of 400va ups that I got from this company that was throughing out a couple hundred of these. They did not know they had a replaceable battery....or system administrator.  Anyway I just purchased a belkin 1200va for my win 2000 adv server. So far so good like it alot so far. After rebates it only cost $55.00. I like the software that has come with it and also that it connects up to the USB port and for all of you that still have windows NT4, it has a com cable port also.

I would suggest not buying Tripplite.  I have not had good experiance with them. The inverters have failed, I had one try to catch fire.  They did replace it and stand behind it.  I have a lot of UPS systems and many are APC.  They are probably a safe bet.

I typically look for ones that I can run for many years and research the battery that they use.  One brand I like it Oneac.  They use Yuasa batteries and I have a local battery shop that stocks them. Replacements cost me about $80 for my 1300 series Oneacs.  My APC 1250RM smart backups use the same batteries.  The same size Triplite cost me $120 for the replacements.

If you are looking to protect high valued equipment like database servers or mission critical servers you may want to spend the extra bucks for a UPS with a rectifier as well as inverter.  These do a much better job at cleaning the lines.  We use PowerWare brand UPS's for our datacenter placed servers.

Thanks for all the great thoughts.

Well, here is a bit more on our situation.

We have several APC 2200s and several APC 900s (Smart-UPS both).

Is there some handy means -- before I splash out big dough on all new ones -- to determine if a simple battery replacement will turn the trick?

I have one 2200 that I will definitely replace, but I have no particular reason to think the others can't be revived with a new battery.

How long do these things last, on average?  My UPSes are about 3-4 years old.  Thanks.

If all you need to do is replace the battery then you should.  The batteries last approx 3 years, but that depend on a lot of things (how many power outages you had, how many servers you have connected, etc).  I just replaced my battery on one of my UPC Smart -UPS and just recently replaced two of my leibert batteries.  This process is straight-forward and you cna obtain the instructions on the UPC website (where I got mine).  Depending on the UPS, though, you will have different configs.  FOr example, my UPC battery was one large battery, where as my leiberts have 8 separate batteries each.  Also the prices vary (UPC $125, Leibert $255.00)

At 3-4 years old, you likely need new batteries.  I would swap batteries in the 2200's and not think twice about it.  If you have a local company that might let you return them, even better.  I get mine from a tire and battery shop. I know that sounds strange, but these are the same batteries that Alarm systems, electric scooters and other devices use.  They have my batteries in stock 80% of the time.  Here is another trick on some APC's, I don't know about the 2200's. I have put slightly larger batteries in them. Just make sure they are the right volts, typically 12v.
