Question

Which AMD Athlon XP+ CPUs for socket 462 266 FSB Elitegroup k7s5a Board?

Asked by: XelaQlito

Hi all:

I have a whole bunch of Elitegroup k7s5a boards (25) with AMD Athlon XP+ 1800 CPUs, 256 RAM, 40Gb HDD and 64Mb Radeon Cards. I want to upgrade the computers in a cost effective way so I'm planning to add a 256 Mb stick, a 40 Gb HDD to each and swap the Video card for a ATI 9250 128 Mb.

I'm stumped as far as the CPU change because of the recent changes AMD has gone through. The board has a 462 socket and it's 200/266 MHz FSB. Question is: Which Athlon XP+ CPUs can I install in this board?

A different problem is, I know, finding them as the Athlon XP+ has been discontinued. But as there are some vendors who specialize in discontinued components, I think I should be able to find the CPUs. I want to be sure, though, that I purchase the right ones before attempting to install them.

     Thanks

You have Palomino cpus in there currently.  You can install any socket-A AthlonXP ThoroughBred cpu up to 2600+, if the BIOS recognizes them (a flash may be necessary).  The Bartons and the top ThoroughBreds run at 333 and 400, so those are out, as well as the Athlon64's, which are socket 754 and socket 939.

I've upgraded 3 K7S5As with XP 2400+ procs without issue.  You'll have to grab at least this version of BIOS: http://www.lejabeach.com/ECS/020809L.zip but check out http://www.lejabeach.com/ECS/ez.html for the latest in information for this board/bios_revs.  As mentioned, you're locked to 266FSB procs, but you might be able to catch someone upgrading or find a shop online with some stock left.

BTW - great board, and no issues.  On a side note, make sure that your IDE controllers have the appropriate driver (if running XP), and your devices are running at DMA if they support it (hard disks).  XP and this board have a nasty habit of negotiating to PIO mode which severely cuts down on your throughput.  I can dig up the link for the driver (and the other howto that explains some registry stuff that's required sometimes) if you need.

Hmmm. Not to sure about the "great board" comment. I have 25 K7S5As and have mixed feeling about them. On one hand they have outperformed similar boards I tried since. On the other, from day one (well, maybe day three or four - early on, anyhow-) they have bugged me with CMOS problems. It's not the battery, I have changed them often. For some reason I still haven't solved, periodically the BIOS will go back to the default settings and I have to indicate date, CPU clock, etc over again. Very troublesome and it means I can't trust certain configurations to stay put (it tries to install the on-board sound card although I have sound cards installed in all the machines).

Has anyone had this type of problem?

btw, I live in Spain. Does anyone know who sells discontinued AMD CPUs in this part of the world. If not Spain, Europe.

Thanks
