The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Ghosting to a Serial ATA drive and booting from it. Windows XP.

Hi

I am upgrading my PC.  I have an ASUS P4PE motherboard which supports SATA.  I have purchased a Western Digital SATA drive (10000 rpm) to give my system a little bit of a boost.  I am running Windows XP Professional, no service packs as yet.

I want to use Norton Ghost 9 to copy my existing IDE drive to the new SATA drive.  If I boot into Windows XP, in device manager you can see a "SCSI disk".  The computer management console does not recognise the drive, and it is not accessible.  I have made it accessible by pressimng CTRL+F during bootup and setting up a stripe array.  When next booted, it showed up in the computer management console.  I selected to create a primary partition on it of the full disk size (70gb).  I set it as my Z drive and used ghost to create a copy of my c drive to this z drive.

I have since removed the IDE drive, and only have the SATA drive connected. In the BIOS, i changed the boot screen to disable all boot devices other than "other boot device -> scsi drive/onboard ata boot device" (i can find no other option that seems related to booting from sata).

If i boot with the raid array still defined, it simply prompts me to "press a key to reboot", and gets nowhere.  If i delete the array, when i boot it says "no array defined, press ESC to boot".  The next screen says "disk boot failure. insert system disk and press enter."

My question is two fold :

1. Do you think my SATA drive contains a valid bootable partition from description?  Having viewed the contents within windows, it certainly looks ok.

2. How do i boot from this SATA drive?

It seems odd that SATA is offered on this board, but there is no obviosu way to boot from it.  Perhaps it's just offered for RAID?  which i dont want ...

Please help!

Thanks
eMicros
