Question

Distorted Audio Playing Tutorial CD's

Asked by: elio11

Hi,
I have just come accross a problem I have never had before.  I recently bought two tutorial CD'squite independently from one another. One plays in Real Audio Player and the other Quicktime.  Both work perfectly regards the visual presentation, but both sound like the tutor is talking through a tank of water. I have never had any other sound problems on this PC, including playing CD's and DVD's.  I am using the built-in soundcard on my Asus P4V8x-X motherboard.
Here are some TEST RESULTS from my PC:

If you're on Windows XP Pro, I would uninstall the sound card and then reboot the computer. XP will discover the sound card upon reboot and reinstall the sound card drivers. Sounds like perhaps the sound card is having and issue with the drivers. Try this to see if it helps.

Hi,
As I said before, I am using the motherboard built in soundcard (so can't disconect it) and I have checked all the settings and they report no errors, and everything else I play on my PC sounds fine. Just these two tutorial CD's that have this problem.  Two friends have told me that they think its a codac problem, but neither knew how to cure it.

hmmmmm its playing scattered for me also.....!!
have you yet tried to play these CDs in a total different system than yours to check out the problem there?

by: wlennonPosted on 2005-03-28 at 07:00:37ID: 13643870

Hi Elio11, I have played the sound clip on my sound card, an Audigy 2 ZS Platimum Pro, using Creative MediaSource, Adobe Audition 1.5, and Steiberg's WaveLab 5 and get the same results as you do.  But then again it was recorded on the sound system you are using.

Have you tried cleaning the Rom you are playing it in, there are cleaning Discs you can purchase to clean the laser lens, too much dust or dirt can cause audio to severly depreciate.  At the very worst (if that doesn't fix your problem) you are only out less than $4.00 or 5.00.

Do you have another Rom Player/Recorder you can try it in?

by: wlennonPosted on 2005-03-28 at 07:12:07ID: 13643960

Also, mainboard sound cards are not always the best, as they are subject to the 100+ Degree F. of constant heat.

If you have a can of compressed air, blow it into the Rom, and then use the Cleaning Disc. Did you purchase the Tutorials from the same vendor, made by the same company??  I have seen this happen on Audio CD's I purchased from a Music Store, the entire batch was bad.  I took them back for the third time and got my money back after making a note of the Lot Number, then purchased them from another Music Store, and all was okay.

I know real Player has an equalizer built in.  I ghave had issues myself with some media not playing properly.  After using the players equalizer I was able to hear the audio clearly.  Also under soud properties you may want to look at teh Master Volume controls.  Some of these may be turned down while the main volume is not turned down.  Have you checked the controls for all of your sound output types?

by: elio11Posted on 2005-03-28 at 09:21:39ID: 13645033

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the useful ideas.  The sound clip I put up WILL sound faulty, it is a RECORDING of the fault.  My CD Rom player seems fine, it plays other media with no problem, so I don't think it is dirty.  Plus, this wouldn't explain why certain sound on websites suffers the same problem.  I have checked the system volume controls, they all seem fine.  The two dics are from completely different sources, recorded on different software, so that rules out it being a bad batch.  Unfortunately, I don't have access to another PC to check the discs on another machine.

It sounds to my untrained ears like the audio is being played back by two different aplications almost simultaniously, with just a small delay - does this help anyone out there point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Matt

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2005-03-28 at 09:28:10ID: 13645105

see its quite possible that the problem is codec..... but i have no idea that what type of video\audio files are stored on these cds.... are they in same format...... if they are single files.... can you try to copy them on your hard disk and then play them from the hard disk directly instead of playing them from the CD?

by: elio11Posted on 2005-03-28 at 10:55:33ID: 13645923

Thanks SheharyaarSaahil ,
The files are both in Quicktime .mov format.  I have copied one of the files to my desktop, but it still plays the same from there as it does on the CD.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2005-03-28 at 11:04:48ID: 13646000

that means the problem is not with the CDs or cd player or with the players...... defective are these files themselves!
it will be sooooo helpful if you can ask someone else around you to test these files in his\her system... or are these files too big that you cannot upload them as you did with that sample .wav file?

by: elio11Posted on 2005-03-28 at 12:51:26ID: 13646965

OK, I have posted one of the files here in .rar compression:

by: pbessmanPosted on 2005-03-28 at 21:34:31ID: 13649803

I opened that file and played the file.  It seems to have made a difference when I adjusted the WAVE file playback properties.  If you opened the Sound, speech and audio devices in the control panel, click on change the speaker settings you can look at the advanced properties for the device volumje and the speaker settings.  Make sure tehse are both set up correctly.  I don't know how they get turned up and turned down outside of this adjustment area, but I have found them adjusted differently than I have set them in here.

Thanks pbessman, I have tried those settings, but it hasn't had any effect :o(

by: bhess1Posted on 2005-04-04 at 14:56:34ID: 13702141

Choppy sound is sometimes a DirectSound problem with Quicktime.

Go into Control Panel, to the Quicktime settings.   Go to the "Sound Out" panel and make sure that DirectSound **IS NOT SELECTED**. If it is, change it to anything else you have available. If this is the cause this should fix it.
