The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Computer won't POST after BIOS upgrade

A classic example of turning a good-running computer into a lunch box.
Pentium4 3.0 with a Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000-Pro motherboard, 1 gig memory, Windows XP Pro.

System had a SATA hard drive.  Wanted to add a IDE drive as second drive.  SATA was redirected to IDE0 as prime drive.  IDE1 was available for plugging second drive, but BIOS would only recognize either the SATA for the IDE drive, but not both.

Called Gigabyte and they advised my bios version (F6) would not support booting from SATA but newer version would, and to upgrade to version F11.  They also advised upgrading one step at a time, rebooting between each upgrade.  Upgrade was performed using bios on-board Q-Flash utility which allows flashing bios without using DOS or Windows, loading directly from floppy.

Flashing went fine until F10 version.  It showed no error, but after reboot, computer was a rock....no beep, no video, not nothing.  Fans are running, but it will no longer POST.

Called tech support back and they advised removing battery to clear CMOS.  They said 10 seconds, book said 10 minutes.  I tried both, but still no POST.  Now tech support was closed until next week, so decided to leave battery out overnight (just in case).  This morning still nothing.  Fans come on, but no beep, no video, no post.

Keep in mind this computer ran perfectly until the F10 upgrade.  How do I clear CMOS and get at least back to version F9 (which may or may not allow the SATA boot, but at least I'll have a computer again)?

This is my primary of 4 machines, so I'm pretty desperate.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.  Oh, yes, and I disconnected the new IDE drive, so the configuration is back to what it was before I tried to install the drive.
