The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

USB drive not detected, kind of....

Asked by raygraham in Miscellaneous Hardware

I have two 2.5 usb hot drives each with a toshiba drive inside. both are identical. i've installed them on a win2k server. i use them as backup devices. they are connected to an adaptec usb 2.0 controller. i've used this many times for backup and have never encountered this particular problem. the win2k server see's one of the drives but not the other. i've named them backup1 and backup2. when i first plugged backup1 in the drive came up in disk manager where i formated it and then it showed up in explorer. no problem. i plugged in backup2 and the usb icon popped up for a half second in the systray and went away. nothing in device manager, no usb drive, no mass storage device, nothing in disk manager and obviously nothing in explorer. i then take backup2 to another machine plug it in and it pops up like nothing's wrong. i can format the drive read and write on the other machine no problems. i plug back into the server and same thing again. usb icon pops up in the systray momentarily then goes away and there's no drive or mass storage device anywhere. i plugged backup2 into the onboard 1.0 usb controller on the same win2k server and it successfully detected it and i could access the drive with no problems. what's the deal???????
