Question

New System WILL NOT BOOT From CD

Asked by: hbtitansfan

Recently assembled a new system (ASUS P5WD2) Motherboard.

This system will not boot from a CD.  I have tried everything from different cables, Master/Slave - Cable Select, Single Drive Configuration, 40-80 wire cables, etc.

The drives show up in the BIOS and BOOT order, but they will not spin-up / boot.  [["Reboot and select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."]]

In my research for help, i found a guy with a similar problem on another board--but no one ever replied to his post.  My problem is nearly identical to his & I have tried everything he tried.  His post follows (to provide more info):

Main difference in systems :  CD's are IDE, Hard-Drives are all SATA Controlled

Thanks.
HB

My HardDrive and CD-ROM are showing correctly in BIOS .
HD is connected to SATA1, and shows as 3rd Master in BIOS. Jumper is on factory setting, pins 1&2.
HD type device is set to "AUTO" in BIOS.
CD-ROM is connected to Primary IDE, and shows same as Master. Jumper set to Master.
CD-ROM type device has been tried as "Auto", and "CD-ROM" in BIOS.
Windows Home Edition XP w/ SP1a included, Retail installation CD.
Boot Device Priority - 1. CD-ROM 2. FLOPPY 3. HD
F10-save & exit, system does not boot. Black screen w/ cursor blinking. Re-boot, and get black screen with message, "Reboot and select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." I push the button on the CD-ROM, the green light on it blinks, and the tray opens, I slightly move the CD in the tray, and re-insert. Press a key, and nothing happens. I don't hear, or feel the CD-ROM spinning up. I re-boot and verify in BIOS that the ROM is being seen, and it is. Try to boot again and nothing. I tried two more CD-ROM's, Ribbon Cables, and a friend brings one of his over too. They all show up in BIOS, I select them as 1st in Boot order, try to boot, and nothing. I tried the 6 Floppy boot disks installation, put the CD in when prompted, and the CD-ROM does not read. I checked the XP install disk in the PC I am using at the moment, and it is bootable. My friend brought his XP install disk, but the CD-ROM's never spun-up. Both XP install CD's are retail and they are bootable.
I then tried using the Second IDE on the CD-ROMs. All are seen, chosen as 1st in Boot order, and will not read.
I thought that maybe there is a conflict with the SATA HD and the IDE busses, so I then disconnected the SATA1 HD connection, and installed a Maxtor IDE HD, connected to Primary IDE, and the CD-ROM to Secondary IDE. Both show up on BIOS correctly. I made sure the CD-ROM is still set to 1st boot device, and try to boot, and same message, "Reboot and select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." While trying all of this, I am making sure all cables are seated properly and looking for bent pins. I reset the CMOS and tried again with no luck. I am thoroughly stumpped! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What is the make and model of the cd-drive?

NEC ND-3540A  (2 of these)

I also tried an older NEC 1100? Drive from a working Dell.  Same thing.

Have you tried flashing the motherboard? I had a similar problem once, and the motherboard just needed an update

I checked ASUS for BIOS updates.  There were none :(  They just released this Motherboard.

I suppose i could re-flash the same version.

Yeah, I just pulled up the specs for the mobo, and there's nothing on the download list that would help with this.

If you haven't already, go into every single part of the BIOS and fish around for anything that might be out of place.

It sounds like an issue with the motherboard, either some sort of incompatibility that hasn't been addressed yet given the relative age of the piece, or possible damage. What kind of screws are you using to attach the mobo to the case? Make sure they've plastic, or if they're metal make sure that they're not touching anything that they shouldn't. I've seen many shorted mobos that half-work.

Past that I would have to say that, again, it's either an issue that Asus will eventually address, or there's a hardware problem with the motherboard and if possible I would ask for a replacement. I would give it some time to see if anyone else can offer some advice, but everything that I can possibly think of has already been tried.

Try different molex power connector and see what happens.  I've seen drives getting enough power to provide info to BIOS, but not enough to spin up drives.

Or better yet, a different power supply.

This Problem was resolved.

There are Two Primary IDE Controllers on this motherboard.  1 BLUE one the side of the motherboard by itself.  The second Primary controller resides on the surface along with the Secondary IDE Controller Plug.  These two are RED.

The RED IDE Ports DO NOT Support Optical Drives.  This was according to ASUS.

The drives work on the side-mounted Blue Primary Connector.

I have read the MB Manual Twice and never saw this specified.  Either it was omitted from the manual, or i simply missed it.  I have since found this to be a common "issue" while digging around for another problem with this board--thus, posting the "fix" here.

Thanks for those that posted.

I assume that Red connectors are IDE RAID.
