Question

OpenGL & Geforce2 GTS

Asked by: DavidBirch2dotCom

Hi all,

I have been having problems with certain games ever since I installed XP about a year ago ... It only seemed to be one or two games so I have ignored it.  However think I have now nailed down the problem:  Certain Games which I try to play crawl along at maybe 5 frames a second (or less).  Some but not all of these are windowed games (which may or may not be affecting this).   But one thing I have found is that they ALL use OPENGL ... in fact in one game I have this morning found an option to disable openGL and the game ran perfectly :D however not all games have this option ...

How can I get OpenGL working on my machine ?  ?

I have a 64Mb Nvidia Geforce 2 GTS card in my machine, which shows up on Device Manager as "NVIDIA Geforce 2 GTS/Geforce Pro (Mircosoft Cooporation)"
I have been to the Nvidia website and followed the instructions and tried this driver http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.72.html however It comes up with 'no compatible hardware detected' so it cant be the right driver ... I have also tried using the update Driver button in device manager to allow XP to connect with windows update ... yet it says all is upto date

Please Help

Did you read the installation hints?

    * "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.

    * Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.

    * Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

I have also just tried installing under safemode but with the same result :(

If it says Microsoft, this is the default Microsoft driver and it does not support open GL. Not all of the latest NVidia drivers function well with older GPUs especially those older than GF4. Suggest that you install a "legacy" driver from NVidia:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html
Favorites:
GF2-GF FX............. Version 2.26
Older than GF6....... Version 71.89
or
..............................Version 53.04
The fact that the current driver is the default should allow you to directly launch the setup for one of these drivers. Do not update the drivers for your video card from Microsoft Update as this will simply install the default driver again.

thanks tmj883 I did find that page but wasnt sure which driver I needed

GeForce2 through GeForce FX GPUs
Windows XP/2000/Me/98SE - WDM Driver
Version: 2.26
Release Date: May 2, 2005

Is not correct since it "... only supports GeForce2 through GeForce FX products with a TV Tuner or video capture input "

Which one should I install?
Why doesnt M$ support OpenGL? Its meant to be industry standard isnt it?

David use this for removing Nvidia drivers best program out there. http://www.drivercleaner.net/ Just use it on Nvidia nothing else or it can take out chipset drivers too. Remove all drivers first through control panel. Reboot, Disable AV,Firewalls ETC... Run drivercleaner Pro Nvidia Video only. Then install New ones. Also chack to see if your running DX-9c. DXdiag in the run box.

You Could go through Nvidias older drivers but Forceware 75 should work fine once everything is removed.
