The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Switching from RAID to IDE

Hello all,

I'm troubleshooting a system with a Machine_Check_Exception error (0x0000009c) that pops up on a regular basis.

I'm trying to narrow down the hardware responsible for causing the problem and have stripped down the machine to just the video, motherboard, hard drive and processor.  So far even with these four the error has still occured.

I noticed that the computer only has one hard drive, yet it is hooked up to a 0+1 Promise Fasttrack array. The RAID is provided on-board via the Asus P4PE motherboard. It does not seem to make any sense for the drive to be in this array, as it should require a minimum of two disks   The user isn't a technical one, so I doubt they removed a drive.  It seems to have come from the builder (a local business) in this configuration, although I'm e-mailing their techs to find out for sure if that is the case.

Is there any reason at all for a single drive to be in a RAID array?  The hard drive only has one partition, by the way.

Now, my question is this... I want to remove the array and move the drive from the RAID controller to the onboard IDE.  Removing the array and swapping to IDE is simple stuff for me but will the user's data remain intact?  Can I make this switch without needing to reformat or do any other changes to the drive?  The OS is XP Home.

I checked the Asus driver section for the model and it doesn't list any IDE drivers there other than the Intel Utilitiy Configuration.

Thanks,

Auriclus
