hard drive data loss

I have two hard drives, one for system and one for documents. Im running win xp.
i had to format my system drive, but after installing new os it started to check documents drive for constancy (?), (blue screen before os is coming up), deleting indexes and later restores smth, but when i finally got in, half of my files were gone.
I continued with windows update, and after one of the restarts it started disk check again. everything looked similar to what happened before, but when i got in all my files were there :)
my joy didnt last long, because after next part of win update and restart and disk check i was back at my "half files gone" part...
i have tried to restart again but it doesnt bring up disk check anymore... i belive my data is still here only i cant see it somehow, can somebody please explain whats going on?

i don't know what happened, but i suggest when installing a OS, to disconnect other hard drives, and hooking them up after the completion of the install.
dou you see the drive in disk management, and can you assign a drive letter?

If what MAGISTUS has posted is not of any help.

Id follow NOBUS recommendation at the top.

My business nearly crumbled around me about 12 months ago until I came on here and was recommended to use GET DATA BACK for NTFS www.runtime.org

Other than that I can not help, but i used that program with an inaccessable drive and it worked! :-)
