The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Serial ATA HDD a wise choice?

Asked by aniston in Miscellaneous Hardware

Tags: sata, gigabyte, pata

My specs: Gigabyte GA-7VT600-PL Rev 1.0 motherboard, Athlon 2800+ Barton CPU, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB 256Bit AGP videocard, 30GB Maxtor, 40GB Maxtor, 768MB DDR Ram, Enermax EG-365P-VE 350W PSU, Windows XP Pro SP2.

My 30GB and 40GB HDD PATA drives are making clicking noises and even creating Delay Write issues under Windows.  I figure its time to purchase a new HDD to replace at least the 40GB HDD which seems to be creating most of the problems.  My motherboard claims to support SATA drives but I'm a bit apprenhensive.

I ould like to keep the 30GB Maxtor ATA drive as my C: (where Windows XP sits) and install the new 200GB Maxtor SATA2 drive as my D:.  Is this possible or must i go either exclusive ATA or exclusive SATA?  My motherboard/chipset(Via KT600) only supports SATA version 1.0 i believe and the new 200GB Maxtor claims SATA2 which Im assuming is backwards compatible.

Another thing, I heard that when not within the Windows OS (so in DOS mode) the SATA drive will not be visible, so lets say I use a drive imaging program like Acronis True Image or even the Windows XP CDROM the drive will be non-existant making reinstalling or imaging a difficult task.  Is this true?

Lastly, if I had a choice between a SATA and ATA drive which would you purchase?  With SATA's advantages and disadvantages, is it still worth checking out over a ATA/133 drive?

Thank you.
