New DVI graphics card: screen goes blank when entering Windows

In order to extend the distance from a monitor to CPU without too much video degradation, I found that I needed to go from VGA to DVI.

So I installed an Nvidia GeForce 5200 AGP card into a Dell Optiplex. The screen boots to the loading windows screen, then goes blank. I booted into safe mode, uninstalled the existing drivers, downloaded the most current Nvidia drivers for WinXP and installed them. Now, if I use a VGA cable, it will boot. But as soon as I put on the DVI cable and restart, I either get a blank screen or it will go blank as soon as it goes from the loading XP screen to the logon screen.

Can anyone point me to the right approach to getting the DVI cable to work?
