Dead DVD Writer? Pioneer DVR-109

Hi

I purchased this pioneer dvr-109 dvd writer about 2 months ago. a week ago it just stopped reading any media. i've tried original and burn cd with no avail.
I searched the internet and i've done pretty much all the solutions listed.

new ide cables. checked the power supply. swapped the ide slot on the motherboard from ide1 to ide2.
upgraded the firmware, searched for driver (coudln't find any). checked the setting in bios/reset the bios.
i had a slave cd burner which i removed to see if that wuold help as well.

I'm not sure what happened. it was working beautifully burning dvd/cd flawlessly, never had a bad burn. And then suddenly it stopped reading anything.
Now when i put in a disc, it doens't even seem to want to read it. and therefore windows always shows up as though there is nothing in the drive.

Any more suggestions or ideas?
