Question

Computer randomly enters standby

Asked by: tomkyn

My PC (desktop) randomly enters standby.

Antec 500W PSU
Asus A7N8X-E
1GB PC2700 RAM
NVidia GeForce 4MX
SB Audigy 2ZS Platinum
WinXP SP2

The time to enter standby is random.  Nothing in the event log.  CPU/MB temp is normal (40C / 22C).

Virus scan and spyware/malware scan clean.

Is this possibly a PSU problem?  Some have suggested to disable power management in WinXP and make PC "Do Nothing" for when Suspend button is pressed (to check for possibly sticky power button).

I have changed the case and PSU before this problem surfaced.

Hey, I'm desperate here!

since you already checked for viruses/spyware and disabled power management i would suggest that you look at the connections between the case and motherboard. Try resetting the connections and you might also want to check the bios for any stand by settings.

When it enters standby, does mouse movement or keyboard activity return you back to prior state?

Check devices in Device Manager, and disable power management for those that have the option (Allow Windows to Turn OFF Device to Save Power or similar).  Will be a Power Management tab for those devices.  Start with USB root hubs.

did you connect the 20-pîn AND 4-pin power plugs?
and how is your setting for going into standby?

adrj - reseated MoBo connection, BIOS has no settings for Standby (except for the standard DPMS for video standby)

willcomp - mouse movement or kb activity does nothing.  The only way to resuscitate the PC is to wait for about 15-20 minutes, after which the PC wakes up, or to turn of the power switch in the back, wait 15 minutes and turn it back on and push the power button in the front.

nobus - I did notice a 4 pin power connector coming out of the PSU, but where on the MoBo do I hook it up?  It's a standard ATX MoBo and I don't see where I can stick the 4 pin power connector.

Setting for going into standby?
BIOS - no settings available, except for the vga DPMS support
WinXP power management - never go to standby
What to do when I push power button setting - do nothing.

It's not going into Standby mode, it's locking up.  Most likely cause is an overheating GPU and possibly overheating CPU.

Check video card heat sink and fan.  Ensure that fan is not clogged up and is operable.  Run PC with side cover removed and no PCI cards near video card.

Check CPU heat sink/fan and ensure that they are clean and fan is operable.

The CPU temp is about 42C under full load, so I'm assuming the CPU heat sink/putty/fan are fine.

I have to get back to you in a bit Re: GPU & video heat sink.  Question: why would GPU/video all of a sudden start overheating?

Re: not standby but lockup...

There is an audible click when the PC goes asleep, also the standby led is ON in the front panel.

willcomp:  the PCI slots have a fan with a duct over them.  the fan was defective, overheating the cast on the NVidia MX4000 to 60C.

Thanks for your observations dude!
