Question

Windows XP Hardware Problem

Asked by: dmurph88

I plugged an IOGEAR USB 2.0 Hub and Card Reader in to my Windows XP Pro machine.  It is identified by XP, and it goes through a series of installation steps as evidenced by the pop-up bubbles by the clock.  At the end, it does not install.  I get the standard bubble:

Found New Hardware - A problem occurred during hardware installation.  Your new hardware might now work properly.

When I plub in the Hub to another XP machine it works fine.    In device manager, there is an exclamation point over "Generic USB Hub" under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".  The machine in question also has a Dell Photo AIO Printer 942 connected to it.  Is this some sort of hardware conflict?

Thanks for any help.

You may have corrupted the USB drivers in WinXP.  Try removing them in device manager and let them reinstall on reboot.

If the suggestion by Callandor does not sort them out then the next step is to remove both devices, reinstall the hub and then connect the printer through the hub.
If the printer will not install it would seem the conflict is not going to be resolved.

If there is a setup program with the hub and card reader, try installing those BEFORE you connect the USB devices. For some equipment, the installation sequence can make a LOT of difference.

try another USB port. it should work. if it doesn't then go to the bios and check that USB 2.0 is enable.. also check to see if your computer has USB 2.0 if it doesn't then that is your problem.

if it has and is enabled in the bios then check the device manager and see if XP has the USB 2.0 driver installed. if it doesn't and is located in the other device (I assume you have SP1 or above) then uninstall it, right click on the computer name at the top of the tree and hit scan for new hardware. this will enable XP to install the proper driver for USB 2.0.

I would remove the devices tjat are having problems.  Go to the manufacture web site and get the most recent install package and or drivers.  Then, like meunannu47 said, you might want to install the drivers before you plug it in.

You will need to have XP service pack 2 for USB 2.0 capability.  By attempting to install a USB 2.0 device you may encounter problems.

Go to: www.windowsupdate.com and perform a custom update.  Select all critical updates and all device driver updates.  You may need to perform this through a series of several reboots and updates to get all of your updates.

You can also go the your motherboard manufacturers website and look for USB drivers available for your model motherboard, but without the XP service pack you will not get very far.
