Hello EE:
A few days ago, I started getting weird errors on my computer. It kept on restarting the computer, and eventually, the computer would not start until after I let it sit for at least 30 minutes. And even then, it would want to do a Check disk operation. The computer freezes often and I have to manually turn it off. Most of the time, the Check disk operation cannot be completed before the computer decides to restart or freeze. The following are errors I have found both in the Event Viewer and simply from what was on the screen:
1. Kernal_Stack_InPage_Error
2. Event ID: 51, an error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.
3. While doing a Check disk operation I see sometimes the following: "correcting error in index $I30 for file 9095", "recovering orphaned file", "correcting errors in the volume bitmap".
4. Computer shuts down while booting or after boot (the following are attempts at quotes, but some of the minor words are not exact): "Problem detected. Windows will now shut down to prevent damage." "A process or thread crucial to system operation unexpectedly exited or been terminated." "Stop: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x83819DA0, 0x83819F14, 0x805F9F88)." "Beginning dump of physical memory."
5. Sometimes, when starting up, I get a screen which states: "BootROM."
6. Most of the time, the LED which shows hard drive use is on, but the CPU usage is at 0%.
7. "TraceLevel located in registry; Default trace level used is 32."
8. Hard drive is a Toshiba MK2023GAS, and is in my laptop. I am running Windows XP Home SP2, with Celeron 2.7 GHz, 768 MB of RAM.
9. "the device \Device\Ide\IdePort0 did not respond within the timeout period Event ID 9"
10. I have used Active Smart Monitor and everything is labeled as, "OK."
11. The temperature of the hard drive seems to fluctuate between 35 ° C and 46 ° C.
12. Toshiba does not have a hard drive checking utility, so I used western digital's and everything still came out as OK.
13. Before these errors started, I could easily use the Internet with the laptop due to it being part of a network and it accessed the Internet through another computer on the network. Now, no matter how many times I try to reconstruct the network, I cannot get my laptop to access the Internet.
Solutions I have seen are as varied as the number of motherboards, hard drives and processors, and include the following:
1. Go to device manager and uninstall the hard drive and then re-boot to allow the OS to re-recognize the hard drive.
2. Get a new hard disk controller.
3. Replace the motherboard battery.
Should I replace my hard drive? Is it going bad? Any other suggestions?
Thank you,
