The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Questions about the value of a UPS

I’m thinking of putting in a UPS whenever I install a computer for a client.  These are generally off the shelf Dells, not custom built machines – but stability and data protection are top priorities.

Is a UPS a ‘must have’ for serious computer users - or can one get by just as well without one?  Should you also use a surge protector or does a UPS provide enough surge protection even though most are rated at considerably less joules than one would want with a surge protector?

‘Online’ UPS’s protect the hardware/hard drives by producing cleaner electricity.  Do offline UPS’s help with this also?  I’m assuming that the cost of online UPS’s would be too high to buy them in quantity for my purposes.

I’m looking at an Ultra UPS at Tiger Direct for around $70:
Ultra / ULT31502 / 1000 VA / 600 Watt / AVR Backup System / UPS.     http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=770423&sku=ULT31502

Any comments on this UPS?  Is there any reason to buy a ‘name brand’ instead of this one?  What is the minimum wattage one would want with a UPS for a typical one computer home setup?

It seems to me that the main function of a home UPS is to automatically shut down ones system in the case of a power failure.  If my power is going out it doesn’t much matter to me if I have 10 minutes time left before I run out of electricity or 20 – especially since I may not even be sitting at my computer when the electric goes off. If this is true do I really need a higher wattage/VA system?   Would the following USP do just as well?
CyberPower CPS525SL 525VA UPS
I can get six of these refurbished units for $155 here:

Any other observations concerning the value of a USP or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Al
