two hard drives installation problem

Hi
I wonder if anybody could help me. I want to install second hard drive in my desktop pc. Problem is that  i want my pc to be boot from my orginal hard drive not from the second one, however it doesn't happen, it always boot from second drive. how i can do that.

Hi Rafi-muqaddar,

Hardware :

Install the driver as a slave.

Software:

Check your bios settings.

(I suppose the 2th HDD don't have OS installed, correct ? )

Thanks for reply Miguel. The OS is installed in second drive. and when you say install the drive as a slave do you mean to set the jumper to as slave

Should second drive must have same os as in first. My first drive is windows xp and second is windows 98

If the OS is on the 2nd drive so your computer has to boot from there :/

Hummm ... ok ... that is another thing .... try this :

Insert the Win XP CD and reboot the computer.
Boot from CD.
Go to Recovery Console
Do the commands :

fixboot<enter>
fixmbr<enter>

Reboot the system and try again.

ok then how can I choose to boot computer from 2 different operating system  because both HDDs have got OS( HDD 1 Windows xP and HDD2 Windows )at pc boot up

Hi Rafi-muqaddar,

That commands rebuit the WinXP boot.ini and makes a menu to choise the OS you want to boot.

on first drive put NTLDR NTDETECT CMLDR and BOOT.INI, with right setup for 2 disk.  Remove those from second disk, only leave OS on it, in fact remove all from root of 2nd disk unless say win98 installed there.  Make it boot disk in XP, or use fdisk from 98 disk to make first HDD the "active" partition.  Will work now.

I guess it might be a good idea to review how the drives are connected... It is good practice to have the boot drive connected as master on the primary IDE channel and make sure your BIOS reflects this. If drives are conected correctly, the machine should boot from the primary master.
