The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Best Ergonomic Mouse

Tags: ergonomic, best, mouse
Hello Experts!  I have an "easy" question for you but need a solid answer to it nonetheless.

I am looking to purchase an ergonomic mouse for use at work.  I am working 8-10 hours per day on a computer and am currently using a standard 2 button mouse (optical) w/ a scrollwheel.  I have been researching this somewhat and have seen that mice w/ trackballs seem pretty popular for ergonomic use.  I am right-handed only and will be using this exclusively at work.

Has anyone had a really good experience w/ an ergonomic mouse?  Did it reduce pain for you stemming from prolonged daily use?  I am hoping to find one (or two) really good choices and to make a decision on which one to purchase.

Thanks very much!

What you are asking is something that you actually need to have "hands on" use.  Personally I like the Microsoft mice.

Perhaps a trip to your local computer store, like CompUSA.  They have an open display of mice where you can "play" around with the actual device as you shop.

The Logitech MX400 is a pretty good mouse: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/EEUR/EN,CRID=2142,CONTENTID=11551.  As irwinpks said, mice are a personal thing and you should try it out before settling on one.

to add on...get an optical mouse, not the ones with the rolling ball (old tech).  though wireless seems like the direction to go nowadays, I still prefer an attached USB mouse as I'm guaranteed 100% connection (and don't have to worry about batteries or recharging)

I think the mousepad is far more important.  Using one of those gel pads for your wrist is far more friendly then using the hard corner of your desk for wrist support.  (although the experts now say that using a wrist pad wil increase your chance for developing carpel tunnel, such is the price of comfort:)  This is only true if you use your whole arm for mouse movement instead of just your wrist.

The new "fad" is the vertical mice.   They work fairly well, take awhile to get used to.

I prefer a cordless mouse, and use them at home, at work, and on the road with my laptop.

I have never had a connection problem.  The Logitech MX series is very good for me, and the rechargable ones means no battery problems.

Some folks seem to like trackballs, but I find that my fingers get sore after a few hours, and the ones that combine mouse and trackball are too clumbsy.

And I agree, mice are a personal thing, and often a mouse that seems great in the store is crap once you get it home.  I work between Sun and pc, and on the Sun, I miss the scroll wheel, and on the pc I miss the middle button.

You should get the mouse at a store with a good return policy so that if you don't like it, you can return it.

Good Luck

I prefer a good logitech USB mouse, and a gel-pad for my wrist.   Once I started using the gel-pad, all my issues with arm and wrist soreness went away.   I have tried the various "ergonomic" mice, and never liked any of them.   Most of them felt "too big" and clumsy to use.

@heatfan07...as you can see, there are differnet opinions...best is to head on over to the store and go check them out in person.

Thanks all for the suggestions.  Allow me to redirect the original question slightly...

Has anyone used a trackball mouse or otherwise ergonomically designed mouse and had good success from it?  I already have a gel mousepad and optical usb mouse.  I am searching to see if any of these more expensive mice that are specially designed will help to relieve the wrist/arm pain I'm experiencing.  Does anyone have any success stories with these?

nix on the trackball mouse..not good. If you are cramped for space..that would be the only reason why you'll get one.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to adjust your seat height so that your elbows are bent close to 90 degrees in use, and the monitor height should be such that your eyes look straight ahead.  The ergonomics of the mouse will have less effect than this.

As I mentioned the trackballs that I have used caused me to have sore fingers by the end of the day.

The combination mouse/trackball have been too large and cumbersome for me...

the vertical mice work great for relieving wrist / arm pain, but are not as "er" comfortable...

they have a clunky feeling, i think this is mainly due to the mouse buttons being vertical, when you press the a mouse button you have to fight the sideways motion it creates...

I've been using the evoluent mouse on my desktop computer for about 3 months now, great for pain relief but still feels "clunkier" then your typical mouse.

some gen. good tips

This as has been mentioned, is mainly a "personal" preference. I tend to not have my hands flat, I feel that is uncomfortable. I rather prefer have my hands closed or in a "ball" type of form, so for me the most comfortable mice to work with should be rather large and bulgy, so that I can comfortably place my hand in "ball form" over them. The brand doesn't really matter. Also the mouse is good if it has a left and right button, and a middle scroll wheel. I don't like small, flat mice or mice with too many buttons or wheels. But mainly it is a matter on how you prefer holding your hands.

ive been using this mouse at home for years, i find it to be extremely comfortable when im putting in long hours infront of the computer. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/EEUR/EN,CRID=2150,CONTENTID=5002

its a trackball, but instead of the forefinger/middlefinger to manipulate the trackball, this one is designed for thumb manipulation. both right and left click buttons are placed like a normal mouse, so the transition to this style trackball is much easier than others.

06.01.2006 at 11:44AM PDT, ID: 16810021
Have you considered trying a vertical mouse?  It keeps your hand in a more upright, "handshake" type of position.  I cannot speak from personal experience as I do not suffer from RSI/carpal tunnel (yet), but I am also considering this type of mouse.

You can see pictures and purchase them from Cyberguys online here:

Good luck in your search!
