The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Laptop Lockup

I have an Inspiron 9200 Laptop and it locks up intermittently.  It's been having this problem for a month now, and i haven't been able to resolve it.  Here's what's going on so far.

We upgraded the memory because performance was bad 512 -> 1GB.  The lockups started after this.

I initially did a once over on the memory with memtest.  It passed the first pass, it was good enough for me.  After the lockups i ran it all night and found out the memory was faulty.  So we returned it, i put new memory back in and ran it all night again it passed all the passes.

Knowing the machine was suffering from windows rot, i reinstalled XP sp2 from scratch.  It still was locking up, so we said hmmm, and put the old memory back.  The lockups stopped, but then returned again.  So we've eliminated the memory problem, it's caused on both the Dell (memorex) memory and the Kingston memory, the Dell also had problems detecting the new modules i eventually coerrced it to take the new memory.  I've ensured they are correct and compatable proper speed voltage and memory layout, it's not a case where i bought the wrong RAM.

So then i thought....motherboard, so i ran the Dell motherboard diagnostics to see if there was something faulty with the motherboard, all tests passed, this was a one pass test.  The DVD drive failed an eject test and so we had that replaced, (that was difficult to get them to bite on it but i fought enough to make them send me a new drive).  I thought it might be HD so i put hitachi's drive tools on it and ran the advanced scan and it passed.

Now the machine locks up and blue screens, i'm going to take Passmark's Burn-in software and try to hardcore abuse it for a day or two.  Is there anything that could be causing this i haven't thought of other than the motherboard?
