This is what I digg up from Google: You might need to update the DVD drive firmware...
"Fellow LG DRD8160B users,
I just fixed my problem that was similar to yours. A little after purchasing my DVD drive, I noticed that it stopped playing some DVDs, while playing others. Music CDs were fine. I visited this site looking for solutions, and found that you too had similar problems. I believe that I have found a solution... and I thought that you might want to give it a try.
The solution for me was to flash my firmware. Go to the LG site, and download the firmware for DRD8160B. It has a wierd name, like LG_DRD8160B-LOTR.exe Once you click on the exe file, it will launch the extracter. Inside the folder with extracted files, find the README file. There is useful information, notably:
a. you will need to create a bootable floppy disk, and copy the files in the extracted folder into the floppy (When asked to confirm overrite of files, choose yes to all)
b. IMPORTANT: For the firmware to work, it is very important that the DVD drive is the master on the Secondary IDE. If you have more than one CD/DVD drive, make sure that the DVD drive is set as the master, (I disconnected the power off my other CD drive, so ensure that it would not be detected during the flash upgrade.)
c. Restart the PC with the boot disc inside. Once this is done, your PC will load the firmware update program. After the A:\ prompt, type LGUP, and the upgrade will begin. Do not disconnect your PC before the process is complete. Once you are told to restart your machine, go on and do so. (This information and more is found in the README file) (If you had disconnected any other drives, proceed to reconnect them after you have switched off your machine.)
d. Once your machine has booted up, your PC will be ready to play the DVDs it couldn't before, but was previously able to. Happy DVD watching. P/S: I think the problem was caused by the fact that there were new DVD encoding formats, and hence this update is necessary to be able to read newer DVDs.
Get in touch if this info is of help.
I'd love to hear of your success stories!

hi
All you need to play the Dvd's is the software the decoding is done by the software program like WinDvd.
Have you tried running WinDvd and then inserting the dvd to see if it plays it,
also in my computer can you go into the Dvd Rom when the dvd is inserted to see the files on the Dvd.
If not it could be a problem with the Dvd disc or Dvd Rom.
