Question

Beep Code Question

Asked by: pimpp1184

Hi. I had built my computer about a year ago and just last week when I started up my computer. It gave me 5 beeps. I looked online and it said that it was a processor failure. So without troubleshooting it further, i ordered another processor and just today put it in and gave me the same beep codes. Pretty much got frustrated to no end. I took out the memory and checked the beep code. It gave me a 1 long beep and then 2 short beeps. Looked online and it said it is a video card failure. So I took out the video card and tried it and it came back with the same beep codes. 1 long and 2 short.
So after that I unhooked everything that was connected to the motherboard except for the processor and it gave me that darn same sequence of beep codes.
Everywhere I checked online it stated that those beep codes refer to video card error OR possibly mother board issue.
Before I go buy a motherboard and spend some more money, I was wondering if someone can verify that it is or could possibly be the motherboard totally messed up.
I had also reset the CMOS battery but that did nothing.
Any suggestions asap would be helpful as I need to get the computer up and running.
Thanks for your help.

Also, the motherboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI

The 5 Beeps that you originaly got sounds to me like a ram issue. Now you are getting the 1 long and 2 short beep codes that suggest video errors. Try pluging everything back in including the monitor and see what error code it gives you. Sometimes you get the 1 long 2 short code if the monitor isnt plugged in. See what happens and let us know what code you get. If you get the 5 beep code then your problem is most likely ram and you should try out a known good module on that board and see what happens. Also, try never to buy anything till you know exactly what the problem is as you could end up waisting money buying items that you dont need to replace. It could be many things causing the error and you need to find the problem by a process of elimination.

Let me know.

Other than that, i fear your motherboard is gone, since you disconnected everything, and replaced the cpu.
Did you measure the bios battery? it should read 3 V, or replace it (2$)

Jeff_01 -- I had actually tried your suggestion in regards to plugging in the monitor before I removed everything and still the same problem. At the moment, I suspect the motherboard is not working especially since I plugged everything except for the jumper cables and the processor. I might go out today and get a mobo and hopefully hope that it is the mobo that was bad which will most likely be.

nobus -- The bios battery reads 3v

nobus. Sorry. I did not not try another video card but I did try without one and it gave me the same series of beep codes.
As I stated above, I removed everything from the computer and just left the processor on as well as the jumper cables and still got the came series of beep codes

my video card?
But I thought it would give a different series of beeps codes if it did not find a video card plugged in all in all. It is incredibly weird that I get the same set of beep codes especially after I unplugged everything from the motherboard except for the processor. Is it normal to get the same series of beep codes after unplugging all the components except for the CPU?
It just doesn't sound normal to me unless I am wrong.

your mobo is dead  - point .

by: vbguest123Posted on 2006-12-24 at 01:15:55ID: 18193940

Best way to solve this problem is to check individual component. I thinks its probably due to motherboard issue. i had this problem few year back on INTEL mobo, i removed AGP card and then replace same AGP card again, problem solved!. Try putting ur AGP card just in the slot (don't insert fully, just insert it to make sure all the contact are made).

by: pimpp1184Posted on 2006-12-24 at 09:18:58ID: 18194579

vbquest123. I only have a pci express x16 slot on the motherboard (actually I have 2 of them). I tried inserting the video card on both of them and got the same set of beep codes.
Like I presumed and nobus as well, i believe its the motherboard thus I am just going to replace it.

I think your computer problem has been solved by now, since you bought a Motherboard. But i wanted to ask you a question, have you tried to upgrade BIOS or firmware before the problem occured ? If you havent installed the BIOS proper way, they same kind of problems can occur......You should have tried to install the proper BIOS before buying a motherboard.................

by: pimpp1184Posted on 2007-01-05 at 20:12:35ID: 18256976

Yes, as I had suspected before starting this help request, It was the motherboard that was the issue. I got a ABIT motherboard. To answer kavlins question, Yes I had upgraded my BIOS and still got the same problem with the beep codes. I had taken every component off the motherboard except for the processor and still had the same set of beep codes which was beyond me so I gave up and gave another motherboard a try. Long and belond, it worked and it actually works so much better than the ASUS mobo I had. With the asus mobo I had, it wouldn't even start up to windows initially, it would just hang up on the windows logon screen and wouldn't do anything. I would have to shut it off and wait for a while and then try again and sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't. But anyway, everything is good.
