Browse All TopicsI bought a refurbishd Compaq d51U Evo slim desktop for use as a car computer. I just got it last week and notices this problem since the moment I turned it on. I am using it on a Lilliput touch screen but have ruled out all peripherials by hooking it up to one of the test stations at my office.
HERE IS THE DILEMMA...
when you hook the machine up with a ps2 keyboard the 3 keyboard lights just scroll back and forth much like the red bar on KIT the Knight Rider car. It is the craziest thing i have ever seen and as a result of this the keyboard will not work.
i am using a usb keyboard. But with it if there is a problem booting or something I have no keyboard support before windows boots up and loads the usb drivers..
I have had this problem for about a week now and Honestly it dod not bother me as the machine was working fine. but due to some hard disk error today. IT just keeps rebooting and when the startup menu comes up in XP I can not use my arrow keys to select a different startup option. . . Now at one point I was able to get into the bios but was presented with a password that i did not know. I really do not want to lose the power on setting of the computer. As it is now when it recieves power it turns on. which is good as it is mounted in the trunk of my car. none of the car stuff that i have hooked to it is causing this problem as it did this out of the box hooked up on my test bench to a regular key, mouse and monitor. .
The bios had a battery just like a normal pc would and also a push button on the motherboard that is labled bios.
I know i need to get into the bios and make sure that the keyboard is enabled and this machine was setup my the company ( who is about impossible to get ahold of ) to be a car computer and run without a keyboard. So I guess it is possible that they did something to it to make it boot with out posting a keyboard error. . . Once agian the alternating lights really make me wonder. .
As it is now. The drive seems to be corrupted from an unrelated incident and i can not select any other startup options for the computer with out a functioning keyboard. . please advise. .

Well I found out the andwer after alot of reading. I will award some of the points as the link posted was the same one that I had found with the manual in it. . .
basically The bios has a reset like any other computer and then there is a jumper for the power on password. it is clodes by default open it up and it lets you right into the bios with out losing any of the bios settings. i was able to get the keyboard to stop flashing it was in " network service mode" thus causing the keyboard lights to flash.. and i was able to use the keyboard after that. .
so problem solved.
thanks

As you mentioned, you need to get into the BIOS.
The keyboard errors were probably set to ignore in the BIOS.
You may be having a bunch of issues.
I would simply send it back to the company since they installed it and it is not working.
You may also check the HP/Compaq site for the reason the Keyboard lights are flashing. It is generally a sign of a malfunction somewhere.
