Question

Broken Computer: CD-ROM, Video Card and Monitor.

Asked by: lirageneve

Hi, folks.

I have a computer, or at least, I had, with the following settings: ABIT AN7, 1GB DDR, Samsung Monitor, GeForce 5700, Seventeam Power Supply, etc.

On jan 17th, with no clear reason, my problems have began. I was using it when I heard a strange noise comming from the case. Right after, my monitor went down. After wondering what it'd be, I knew that my CD-ROM was broken, just like the monitor.

So, I replaced my monitor and everything seemed to be fine till jan 18th, yesterday, when my display got lines crossing the display area and pictures were distorted. One more time, I tested my components in another computer. Conclusion: display card was also broken.

Since then, I can't use my computer because i have no other video card to replace. I'm willing to buy a new one, but I'm afraid of what happened to my broken parts that caused all this sequencial 'brokens'. I could only notice that the CHIPSET cooler was stopped during all this time and I'm wondering if it could be the 'responsable' for this mess.

I'm looking for any help that allow me to clarify this situation.

Thank you in advance.

Rod.

i might look at the power supply.

I agree - unfortunately, when a power supply fails, it can send a surge through anything it is connected to, including motherboard, video card, hard drives and any other peripherals it is connected to.  You might want to check the wall outlet where the pc is plugged in, since bad voltage from an outlet can damage a power supply.

Jonmclean2 and Callandor, Ty for ur answer.

You are telling me to check the power supply. How can I verify if it's ok? Is there any specif test I can execute?

One of the best features of the abit boards now is the addition of the dual 7-segment POST Code LED display. Similar to what is found on many other boards these days, ABIT have included a diagnostic display that gives a step-by-step indication of the boot process. I would power it up and post the LED code here for further assistance.

You can test it with a special tool: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16899888901, or you can use a multimeter and hook it up to a load like a hard drive.  The pins should have the following voltages: http://pinouts.ru/Power/atxpower_pinout.shtml

Here is where you can get LED codes for your abit board:

Hey 1r2d2c3po and Callandor.

Ty for ur answers. I'll try to get motherboard LED codes and check my power supply. I just dont know if I be able to buy that product. Anyway, Can i detect come error through the BIOS? There is a section that shows a lot of information about voltages.

With Abit's SoftMenu BIOS, I know you can adjust voltages on the fly. This is usefull for over clockers to get the most out of it. As for a place in there that maintains logs as to what happened, I check mine later to let you know if I find anything.

by: CallandorPosted on 2007-01-19 at 12:29:17ID: 18352218

The BIOS voltage reporting is not as good as testing independently, because if you see a strange voltage, you won't know if the power supply or the motherboard is the cause.

you can test the cpu on another mobo, but chances are your mobo is dying or dead.

try looking for blown capasitors (the one that look like barrels). if they expended then you board is dead.

What were the noises you heard from the computer?
were they a series of beeps?

Hey Guys. Ty for all replies.

I'll get my monitor tomorrow, jan 23th, and I'll try everything suggested. As soon as I did that I'll post the results. So we can continue to discuss it.

Btw, I could not find that equipament to test my Power Supply and I'm still wondering how I'll test it. And I got a new Akasa chipset cooler. Hope it works

Ty again and cya soon.

Hello everybody.

Well, That's what a did yesterday:

1) I opened the Power Supply and could not see anything wrong.
2) So, I installed a new AKASA chipset cooler that is running fine.
3) I also installed my new Video Card.
4) I used to have a lot of things plugged into filter line. So, I bought a NoBreak and 'split' cables between them.
5) I Plugged monitor and turned computer on to check BIOS Voltage Monitoring. All good!
6) I'm still monitoring temperatures using SpeedFAN.

Since then, Computer is running smooth and with no strange sound. Temperature is also ok til now. I'll continue monitoring them to check if anything wrong is going to happen again.

I'll split (up) points between all answers that make sense in this situation, giving more points for those that got closer to the POSSIBLE resolution, since there is no specific and correct answer.

Cya,
Rod.

Hey. I'm back.

I've been testing my computer since my last post and, fortunatelly, everthing is OK. I described what I did and as it stated, I'm going to split up the question points. Ty u all for helping me in this question.

The things I did to "correct" the problem were:
1) an instalation of a new chipset cooler and...
2) a new good no-break to avoid voltage problems
PS: the power supply was ok.
