CRT invalid display type

That's the error I get, "CRT invalid display type". I found it in Event Viewer in admin tools.  Apparently, that causes my computer to restart by itself or just crash for no apparent reason. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Could you please post the full error from admin tools. and by any chance are you running ATI Catalyst and what version of it are you running?

Um it just says "CRT invalid display type"
Yeah I have 9800 and the latest driver.
If you double click on the error in Event Viewer, it will give you the full details of the error. Also uninstall the ATI Catalyst software from your add/remove programs.
For more infor go see here : http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=29385
The way to fix this is to go back to a standard display type that is known to work.

Right click desktop, properties, settings tab, advanced,  monitor tab, properties, choose the standard 1024 x 768 super VGA montor type, and choose 60 Hz in the previous display -- that will fix the problem.
scrathcyboy:, No way. 1024x768 looks like a bad version of a very old computer at 800x600. The only thing I can handle is 1280x1024. It's been that way since I got this computer and I've never had problems until recently.
It's at 60 Hz.

eXpeLLeD_4RM_heLL, That's all it says, I swear...  "CRT invalid display type"
I uninstalled my newest ATI driver and installed 7.6, like the article says... it didn't work.
When You double click on the error, their should be a copy sign on the right hand side below the down arrow. Paste the  info in notepad and post the error here so we can see it.

This?
Correct. That's the error I needed. What I want you to try is uninstall all ATI software that is resident on your machine. Restart it and the download ONLY the display driver from : http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp and install it.Thereafter restart the machine and see if it gives u the error. If you can't do without the catalyst software, i would advise trying Catalyst 7.1 or 7.2 thereafter.
Didn't work.
I don't care about getting the errors. My computer keeps crashing and restarting because of the error. That post clearly states that it just hides the errors, it doesn't fix it.

you can try to delete the monitor in device manager, reboot and test
Deleting my monitor? What will happen then? You are all talking to me as if I know something about this.
it will be reinstalled on the next reboot
didn't work
can you test the monitor on another PC?

Hey NoDoubt
Sorry about the late response, was busy wid exams.
Remove your graphics card and test the machine and see if it still gives you the same error.
Also check your machine for dust and clean it out especially around the CPU fan and graphics card fan.
I'm also suspecting that this could be a PSU problem in that it is not supply enough power to the graphics card. The last option to try is test another PSU with ur machine.
Currently, the fix is still to revert back to the Catalyst 7.6 drivers (see my proposed solution above).

Steve : )
My catalyst driver was out of date (sept. 28,2007), there's an updated catalyst driver (Nov.1 ,2007).  I'll see if that fixes it.
I have been trying to track down what has been wrong with this error for a while, so great kudos to Experts Exchange, joining this database has already paid for itself as far as I am concerned.

I have installed the latest catalyst driver 8.1, and still get this same error.

Is there any known update...or just go back to version 7.6??
As far as I know (and I haven't tested for myself because I don't need to anymore), the issue is still the same.  You could try the latest Catalyst drivers, and revert back if it doesn't work (but you've probably already thought of that!).

Steve :)
Thanks sda100,

I think I may have to do that, tried deleting the monitor, as suggested above as well, but error still appears.

Oh well, will have to try and see what the outcome is.

I still don't believe an adequate solution has been offered with this.  Going back to old drivers seems a rather poor work around in my opinion.

Is there no other option other than this??  What about any updates on the screen side??
Going back to the old drivers is not a 'workaround' - It's ATI's official fix for the problem (see my link above), even though it may be temporary.  You can pretty much guarantee that if there was a better solution out there, ATI would be the first to know about it (and presumably provide a fix).
OK, concede the point.  Still think it is not so good that they cannot make their product compatible with the screen itself in upgrading the drivers.

So it is back to the old driver for me.  Sick of seeing errors in my logs.

I agree it sucks, and was really annoying for me at the time I (I don't have an ATi card anymore).  It's almost certainly a driver error... something that works with the later brand of ATi cards, and not with the older ones.  I don't think it's anything to do with your monitor at all.

Steve
Just good to have a solution I guess, I notice they have released 8.2, again no mention of the error, I guess most of their resources go into the future and not the past....sort of reminds me of auto's really...lol

Thanks again.
Forced accept.
