Ok not 100% sure this will work on the Thinkpad but it's worth a try. Click Start->Control Panel->Mouse. This should bring up the mouse properties window. There should be a tab labeled device settings or something similiar. In there should list all the "mouse devices" and let you disable the touch pad. I would suggest you have a usb mouse or another mouse already plugged in and working as well. This is because you will have to use keyboard commmands after you disable the touchpad with nothing else attached. Hope this helps.

Not sure what the touchpad is in a IBM Thinkpad T41 2378-DHU, but try installing the latest drivers from the manufacturer for the touchpad. Then look for a setting on the driver to disable it.
