The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

POST -> no bios -> 5 beeps Looking for Solution other than warranty return or new purchase if available
Tags: microsoft, ambios, xp, pro sp2, ecs elitegroup, Micro ATX Intel Motherboard, ECS 945GCT-M/1333 (V3.0) LGA 775 Intel, new in box from newegg, Won't boot at all 5 short beeps, previously boot to os sporadically with pointer/cursor glitching (pause each second)
CPU-Pentium D 2.8 - RAM (2) 512mb patroit less than a year old. Tried reseating RAM and CPU. Suspect "Freeware" hardware management program which was removed because it didn't work thats when these issues started. The freeware was supposed to allow me to monitor the CPU and other hardware temps but didn't register any temps across the board so I uninstalled it and pretty sure immediately afterwards it became harder and harder to boot to Os. Tried to update BIOS but not sure if it "took" before it wouldn't start windows at all. Is there a way to walk it through if it doesn't post to BIOS? It will POST but stops just before video display and beeps 5 times. Onboard  video of course

Software is unlikely to cause a hardware problem, except if you are flashing a BIOS.  Most freeware are secret virus or spam programs which can infect your machine and make it harder to boot with time.  Try booting with a Knoppix CD (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html) to see if your hardware works normally.  If it does, you will have to clean up your hard drive from malware that was introduced, and I would recommend SuperAntiSpyware, Adaware 2007, and Grisoft AVG.

If it is the video that is casuing the problem, you can put in an add-in card to an available slot, disable the on-board video in the BIOS to see if you can get it to boot with that.

K I don't know if I need to post a different question for this but .....
My comp doesn't display anything on video nothing at all. I press the power and the fans kick on the hard drive turns once (guessing) then optical checks (light on) then it beeps five times over and over. I put my xp disk in the optical and nothing I removed the hard drive still nothing (minus the sound of hard drive at boot) I added a different hard drive same thing. Shouldn't the mobo at least display the bios results if the hard drive is disconnected?

If there is a video problem, then you won't see anything at all.  Judging by the mnumber of beeps you have a dead video chipset.  do you have a spare video card that you can put in the box, even a PCI one if that is all that is available on the board?

04.27.2008 at 06:47PM PDT, ID: 21451096
Waiting for one from a friend bout half hour but I can't change the bios settings as suggested previously if it won't go past post.

04.27.2008 at 06:48PM PDT, ID: 21451097
I actually jsut looked up your motherboard manual, and it uses an AMI BIOS, according what I can find on the internet 5 beeps is a CPU failure.    Chekc to be sure the CPU fan is spimming and the CPU and it's heatsink are properly seated.

04.27.2008 at 07:20PM PDT, ID: 21451198
Fan spins immediately on power up and stays on should I  try to swap cpu's first or can something on the mobo cause damage to my other cpu?

04.27.2008 at 07:22PM PDT, ID: 21451208
If you have antoher system that uses the same processor, I would try your processor in that machine first, for the reason you ask, it could potentially be the motherboard that has a problem that cold harm the other CPU, but a bad CPU is unlikely to harm a motherboard.

04.27.2008 at 08:24PM PDT, ID: 21451422
processor and Ram check out fine on my other system still waitin to try vid card

04.27.2008 at 08:27PM PDT, ID: 21451435
99% sure I'd say its the mobo, if the BIOS beep code is right.

Hlso try shorting the cmos by jumpering the two jumpers next to the battery or remove the battery for about 5 minutes with the power unplugged.
It will reset the cmos in case the board is overclocking.
It could also be the power supply.

It is very rare that a cpu goes bad - a motherboard is more likely, and you should inspect it for bad capacitors: www.badcaps.net.  Power supplies also can have bad capacitors.

04.28.2008 at 09:15PM PDT, ID: 21459672
The power is seemingly working. No capacitors show failure at least to basic visual inspection. If I have to replace this board can I do it with another model with out having to reload the os or reformatting my Hard drive?

04.28.2008 at 09:40PM PDT, ID: 21459733
You best bet to replace the board without having to reinstall the O/S is to get the exact same model you have now.  Second best is to get one that has the same chipset, thirdly is to get one that has the same chipset manufacturer, (Intel, VIA, nVidia, etc).  Mileage will vary after the first one.
