The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Sony DVD Burner Problem

I am running Windows XP SP2 on a desktop machine. The motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLi (Rev 0901) with Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 @ 2.13. The motherboard is relatively new and I have updated the BIOS on it.
My Sony DVD Burner has apparently died on me. It does not recognize blank media anymore when inserted. I am referring to the windows window which pops up - that does not happen anymore. Nero and Ashampoo hang when I try to burn content. ImgBurn works and allows me to burn ISO images. I am also able to read content without a problem.
Please advise on what could be wrong.I am looking for help in determining if the drive is defective or not and if it can be fixed at all.
Thanks

Uninstall any packet writing software like InCD etc, then use the following link to delete the upper and lower filters, reboot and check if it is good.

Before I edit the registry, please advise on which of the following programs use "packet writing" technology
Alcohol 120%
Ashampoo
Clone CD
Clone DVD
Corel DVD Copy
Imgburn
Winamp
iTunes
Nero
Pinnacle Studio
Ulead Videostudio

Thanks

InCD belongs to nero (don't uninstall nero completely, just InCD if it is installed). I don't know if Pinnacle, Ulead, Ashampoo or corel include their own packet writing utility.

OK. I dont have inCD on the machine. I went ahead and made the registry tweaks. Reboot the PC and inserted a blank DVD in the drive. Same result. Windows does not recognize it as a blank disc. Is ther any way for me to test the drive before I venture out to get a new one? I am hesitant because it reads fine and writes ISO files without a problem.

IMGBurn can burn an ISO.  What type - CD or DVD?

And you can read already created CD and DVDs fine?

Is there a difference between CD-R Disks and DVD r(w) disks? The iso files you can burn, are they CD's or DVD's or both?

05.16.2008 at 12:38PM PDT, ID: 21585766
I can burn CD or DVD ISO files using ImgBurn. I can read all CDs and DVDs including RW discs.

Then the drive is OK, and you probably still have something loaded that prevents most software from taking over.

It seems like its a software problem and not a hardware problem.

You're running a lot of different software burning applications.  There could well be a driver conflict between them causing the problem.  Which ones though I don't know.

See here

http://aspi.radified.com/

This article talks about the ASPI drivers used in Windows XP.  Read the article and use the ForceASPI util to change your ASPI drivers to 4.6

These are the most compatible drivers and **may** solve (cross fingers) the problem.

I tried a couple of things. First the post from dbrunton. Attached is the log file. This has not helped. Am still having the issue.
I also tried DriveCheck which was something I googled. It s utility from Sony to check the drive. That was a success but the problem still persists.
THis is beginning to sound like a reinstall of Windows is the need of the hour unless anyone else has additional tips.
Thanks

If you do do the reinstall check the operation of the burning apps after each install to see that they are not conflicting with each other.

05.16.2008 at 03:13PM PDT, ID: 21586853
I am leaning toward the reinstall simply because if I buy another drive, i might have the same issue. WOuld it help if i make the RW drive the master and my ROM drive the slave? Just checking. I think i read this on a site.

Shouldn't make any difference.  Easy enough to try though.

If one program (imageburn) works, then changing the drive would not make any difference, as the drive works. One thing you should check, have you selected the correct drive in the other burning apps? If you have setup virtual drives or have more than one optical drives, you'll find that sometimes the app tries to burn to one of the other drives...

05.21.2008 at 10:41PM PDT, ID: 21621191
I reinstalled windows and the drive is working fine now. I have not yet burned a disk but at least blank media is being recognized consistently.

OK.  So slowly install burning applications and see what happens.  Might pay to make restore points before each application so you can backtrack if necessary.
