The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Raid Controller only sees one drive

Working on one of my home computers - current drive config:
C: - SATA drive connected to mobo on-board SATA controller
D: - SATA drive connected to Silicon Image 3112 Satalink RAID controller PCI card

I bought the SI card a few years ago with the intention of eventually creating a RAID 1 mirror set on the controller, which I finally did today.  I bought an identical drive to D: (same manufacturer/model: Maxtor 6V300F0) and connected it to the RAID card.  But the card's BIOS doesn't see it.

I have tried the following:
- swapping SATA channels on controller card.  Original D: drive is seen on both channels and mounts successfully on both.
- connecting new drive to spare SATA port on mobo.  Drive comes up just fine; I was able to initialize the disk successfully.  Problem is that I can't set up hardware RAID in this config.
- updated Windows driver for RAID controller.

The one thing I haven't been able to get going is flashing the BIOS on the RAID card.  The command-line tool (SiFlashTool.exe) won't run correctly if the D: drive is mounted, and yet if I unplug it then the tool doesn't even see the controller!!   Unbelievably frustrating.

Any other ideas??  Next thing I can think of would be to swap the RAID card out, but I'm trying to minimize futher investment at this point, especially with a PCI interface card.

Thanks in advance.Start Free Trial
