Hard Drive Failure?

Hi all,

I tried a few different searches and didn't find any directly helpful info, so here goes a post...

Windows XP Pro Computer has failed multiple times during a routine system virus scan. Sometimes it results in BSOD, sometimes it just hangs and has to be rebooted.

Thinking that it is a hard drive issue, I issued a 'chkdsk /r' to scan the HD. This never reaches completion. On the last stage (stage 5 of 5), it get to 10% complete and just stops. I've tried this now multiple times and it is always the same. In fact, I had to F8 out just so that I can boot the system to a usable state.

I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Any diagnostics I can try running?
