Question

how to backup bios for Sony Vaio FW-4ZTJH?

Asked by: jazzIIIlove

Hi, I am planning to update my BIOS of Sony Vaio FW-4ZTJHsince I need virtualization that SONY disabled deliberately.

Sony doesn't propose any update regarding this model yet but there is an unofficial solution that worths trying in the link: http://levicki.net/downloads/ as VT Patch 1.1

My bios information is as follows:
Provider: American Megatrends Inc.
Version: R3100Y0
Issue Date: 04/22/2009
Size: 2048 KB
Start Up Drivers: Floppy Disk, Hard Disk, CD-ROM
Abilities: Flash BIOS, Shadow BIOS, Selectable Boot, EDD, BBS, Smart Battery
Standards: DMI, ACPI, ESCD, PnP

My questions are:
1) What is the risk? Has anyone encountered an unpleasant result? Does that cover my warranty if I fail? (2 year I have)
2) How to backup my original BIOS? Does this help if I screwed and bricked the laptop?

Best regards...

as for the patch, the risk is if it is wrong, or bad, that your system is dead
here is how to backup the bios :  http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/41

Hi nobus, thanks for the backup. The backup is just for being safe after the bios update that I need to see the virtualization section that Sony removed deliberately.

My system is fully operating, no problem but only for virtualization, that most of virtualization programs need for it and since the bios is reduced and VT is not visible in bios, I need to have it desperately.

Update: I tried to appy the Mr. Levicki's solution to my Vaio. I formed a USB that is formatted as Fat-32 and put the files as he states in the readme.txt but after the boot, simply, it didn't boot with that USB. The system passed directly to my grub screen.

When I boot a non-Vaio machine, the booting operation stucks and I think this proves that the USB is working fully but my Vaio cannot recognize it simply. It's a standard 1 G kingston, no U3 property.

Note that, in the readme file, Mr. Levicki says "put the bios default and you can change the boot order." So, I put the bios to defaults. Naturally, bios sets the boot order from hard drive and disables the external boot which USB case, and I set it enabled and change the boot order as external but as I said, it passes without any glitch to grub screen to choose OS.

So, do you think the patch doesn't suit me or do i miss stg according to the instructions?

Best regards...

let me try to boot with DVD? But there is a selection for boot order as external device? Why on earth Sony put it then?

This is a well-known (and consistently disliked) "feature" of Sony's laptops -- purportedly done to eliminate the threat of hypervisor-based rootkits.

There are several threads on BIOS modifications that will enable VT.    The Levicki patch you found is indeed the simplest, and should let you enable VT with no problem.

Be aware, however, that a bad flash can render your laptop useless -- so proceed with caution !!    The Levicki patch, however, only modifies one byte in the BIOS, so it's pretty safe.     Note that it does NOT enable VT ... it simply unlocks the control register so you can enable VT with a 3rd party utility (such as the CrystalCPUID or VTCtrl utilities he notes in the article).

As far as installing it -- when you formatted the USB stick did you make it bootable?    Have you confirmed that on another system?     The VAIO should be able to boot from it with no problem.    If you have problems creating that and want to take the "easy way out", just get a USB floppy drive and do it with a floppy :-)

>>As far as installing it -- when you formatted the USB stick did you make it bootable?    Have you >>confirmed that on another system

I have formatted USB as FAT32 and simply copy paste the files and set the boot order from bios as external devices first. Of course, prior to this, I change the BIOS to system defaults as Levicki's said in readme.txt

But, while I was booting the machine, it simply passed to harddisk and I was thinking the USB is not bootable and put it to another machine that is not a VAIO. When I booted with that USB, it locks as blackscreen and cannot get into to the OS. So, I guess the USB is 100% but incompatible with non-Vaio machine. (Though I am not sure, I mean to make it bootable, the bios setting is enough or maybe I need something as syslinux to make bootable?)

I will try it for USB floppy drive or do you suggest to do the operation with a CD which is scary if that stucks.

Best regards...

CrystalCPUID or VTCtrl

>>CrystalCPUID or VTCtrl
and I haven't seen that information in the readme or anywhere else. If I successfully patch the bios, what is the risk of configuring those programs. I mean is there risk of those programs to brick my machine after the successful bios patch?

Just formatting the USB stick with FAT32 does NOT make it bootable :-)     You need to add an operating system ... MSDOS, for example.     Your other system is hanging because it sees the USB stick, but there's no valid operating system on it.     There are various ways to create a bootable USB flash drive ... just Google for it  [I simply copy a bootable image from a floppy ... but you don't have a floppy drive, so you'll need to use another technique].

As for CrystalCPUID & VTCtrl -- they're mentioned at the bottom of Levicki's note detailing VTPatch:
http://levicki.net/articles/tips/2009/02/20/HOWTO_Enable_Intel_VT_on_Sony_VAIO_notebook_with_AMI_Aptio_EFI_BIOS.php

The Levicki patch only changes the control registers so VT CAN be enabled ... it does not enable it.    You'll need to download CrystalCPUID  (a free download -- just Google it) or the VTCtrl utility (which, as far as I can tell, he has not yet added to his download section).

Note also that Sony will be releasing BIOS updates for SOME models in late October to enable VT ... so you may be lucky enough that Sony resolves this for you in just a few weeks.    The release of Windows 7 (which requires VT for XP Mode) is clearly the reason for this.

Ok, but should i simply install MSDOS to that USB? or what? any guide regarding this?

>>SOME  models

I am not sure, mine will be in the list. You have any knowledge regarding this?

by: garycasePosted on 2009-09-23 at 22:30:33ID: 25410309

Try the tips here -- depending on what you have access to (e.g. a floppy, etc.) you can choose the one that best fits your situation:  http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

As for what models Sony will be providing VT support for, I don't have any insight ... I just know they've made public comments that they will be adding that support for many of their newer models so they can fully support Windows 7.
