Question

When running games on my PC the PC just trips and shuts down?

Asked by: Redeye2k8

Ok i am at the verge of throwing my PC in the bin and starting again.

I have an issue where i can run all of my normal daily tasks on my PC such as email, internet, itunes and even my DJ software runs with out a problem, my issue starts when i try and play games. Ok i suppose i will start with my PC specs

All factory default and the system is not overclocked!

Gigabyte S Series Gaming Motherboard
AMD Phenom x3 Processor
4 GB OCZ Ram (1GB Each Stick)
Artic Freezer Pro Cooler
Storm 800watt PSU
BFG Tech 285 OCX Graphics Card - With latest NVidia drivers
Coolermaster Case (Very Well Ventilated)

I have a XFI Platinum sound card but not re-installed it just yet so using on board sound.

Im now using Windows 7 x64 (Just moved from Windows Vista x64 via clean install, I have tried a reinstall of vista and xp and the problem still occurs)

Ok i have almost re-built this PC as i have just replaced the motherboard (used to have an asus), heatsink and PSU as i thought one of these may have been the issue i also had my BFG Grfx card replaced under warranty (BFG Tech where brilliant as i now know it was not the card).

The problem i have is that i can play games such as world of warcraft and Team Fortress 2 with no problems but when i come to play games such as Left 4 Dead or Warhammer Dawn Of War II or try and run the windows PC rating (present in vista and win7) My PC will just shut down instantly (just like i have pulled the plug out or something) with no warning or any indication as what has happened in the logs when i boot back up.

please help i have no idea where to go from here!!

Hi G000se, thanks for the update, i have checked for overheating hence buying the Artic Freezer Pro Cooler.

My cpu is peaking at 27 - 30 Degrees - according to the motherboard monitoring tools i have installed (From Gigabyte)

You didn't say what speed the ram is, but a quick and dirty test, is to try it with only 2 sticks.
Does it still shut down?

My memory is 800mhz DDR2, When i get home tonight i will give it a go with only 2 sticks

Only other thing I might suggest is trying to roll back the graphic driver.  Sounds stupid, but I've had issues running the latest and greatest at times.

Try uninstalling and using what you get out of a windows update and see if that makes a difference.

My first thought was also overheating but that seems to be covered so, this might work, FIRSTLY -->  Switch out your power supply, just to test with, use another power supply and play the game. Also the 285 series uses 12 pin power yes?  Make sure BOTH 6pin power plugs are connected to the card.

Then make sure that your bios version supports multiple cores correctly. It might say dual/quad on the box, but sometimes a specific bios version is needed to correctly work with a certain chip. Im sure that can be verified with Gigabyte.
Try using just 1 or 2 cores this way --> Run the game, minimize window,  press alt +cntrl +del to get the task manager, look for the game under the p"processes" tab,  right click on it --> set affinity , choose 1 or 2 cores.
If the game is bombing in cut scenes etc it might even be a faulty codec or Fddshow.  Download and install latest K-lite Codecs  Think its version 5.20.
Boot with ultimate boot cd or any other boot disk with MEMTEST+86  and test your memory indivdually to make sure all your ram modules are in good and working order, memtest will stress the modules and it might take some time but well worth the effort to know that they are all 100%
Im leaning more towards a hardware issue but try the above mentioned and let us know if you succeed.
Good Luck :)

I've just installed WIndows 7 and I have a Radeon 4890.  I can't install the ATI drivers without the PC blue screening.

So I'd suggest what someone said above, role back the graphics drivers and see how you go.
