Cloned the hard drive - no errors.
Swapped memory - same.

It blue screened when I used a Winernals cd on boot.

I cant get it to safe mode - have been there afew 100 time over the years.

Very slugish to start - the bios progress bar takes 1 minute +

Odd thoght it did boot ok on a Linux Fedoara live DVD.

Will try a new hdd and load windows again.  To me ints not lloking like SW but I could be wrong.
I suspect hardware (mobo) but could be something else.

Drashiel: BIOS battery out / back again improved boot time (on new hard drive with new op sys)

Im mistified as to why the old hdd wont boot.
Ive scanned it for bugs- ok
Tested it for HW probs - ok.
Wont f8
Wont boot to systernals.
Will boot to Linux live fedora

So I think I may have to throw in the towel on getting the old op sys running agian and run with new hdd and op sys.

redbmaster:
How far do you get to in the boot, because it sounds like you are getting the system to post if you can get into the bios.

> I get a blinking cursor top left.  Done a full Dell diag - all passed.
