Associate Office 2010 Starter with WPS (Works) File in Windows 7
We have Office 2010 Starter installed.
It opens WPS files (Works) via the File --> Open menu but we can't get it to associate with Word (i.e. double click = open).
There isn't a WINWORD file (or something similar) to associate it with it.
How do we do it or is it even possible?

bz43: I did this but nothing happens. I double click on it and nothing. What now?
I don't know. I clicked the request attention button. Hopefully they can get more experts to look at your issue.
I think bz43 misunderstood your needs and suggested how to associate *.doc and/or *.docx files with Word. They should already be associated with Word. It is Microsoft WORKS word processor files with the *.WPS extension that you wish to associate with Word, correct?
What you should be able to do is this:
Control Panel > Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations.
Select the *.wps file type in the list and click the "Change Program" button.
A new "Open With" window should appear showing a list of programs with their friendly names.
Look for "Microsoft Word" and select it. If it isn't showing (which would be unusual) click the "Browse" button and locate it.
I cannot recall how you confirm that you want to apply this change, but it should be apparent when you get there.
The other way is much as bz43 described, and you would have to do this if the *.WPS file extension didn't show in the list of file types as described above.
Right click a *.WPS file > Properties > General tab > Type Of File > Change. Choose Word from the list or "recommended" programs or the list below that, or else click the "Browse" button and navigate to your "winword.exe" program file.
Once selected, be sure to tick the box entitled "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" to apply the change.
Let us know how you get on.

(if this works do the same for *.docx file)
2. Right click the file (i.e. doc) and select Properties.
3. Click on the general tab and locate the section that says opens with and click change....
4. Change Microsoft Office 2010 Component to Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler
5. Click OK and OK again to exit settings.
This should set the file associations correctly.
