Filled ink manually

I manually added black ink to the Black cartridge after it ran out on my Canon MX310 all-in-one printer/machine (not me personally - a guy in the printer ink shop). I used a universal refill kit. The cartidge is now full (for sure) but the printer still reports "black cartridge empty". I tried fiddling with the printer menus and printer driver software to no avail.

I work with Windows XP SP3, the printer is connected via USB (if it makes any difference)

How do I fix that?
