Common Internal Modem Problem

I recently purchased an internal Connexant V92 Data, Fax, Voice modem which has been successfuly detected and installed properly on COM3. I am using Windows 98(FE) My problem is that windows detects the modem on all my PCI ports, I have tried them all, but when i try to use the modem it says its in use my another telephony program. Also when I go into the diagnostics for more information I get the Open Comm: Couldn't open port error.
I have tried so many different things to try and fix this but it is driving me insane. I have checked a lot of sites and I see this is a common problem but no-one has been able to offer me a solution.

USEFULL INFO:
Make/Model  :  Connexant / CNXT V92 Data Fax Voice
SERIAL      :  CNXT11252-11

Thanks

The best advice I can offer is not what you want to hear, buy a better modem.

Did you try in a different slot?
Please post a summary of the "so many different things" you've tried.
Does your modem have jumpers that can be set for different IRQs etc?
Check your SYS TRAY (all those icons on the lower right corner of your desktop) find the one that's starting the Telephony and right click on it, if it has a disable or exit....do it.

Now do the modem diagnostic and see if its busy.

If the icon doesnt have a disable or exit, find the software manual or CD and find out how to disable it. If your not using it uninstall it in the control panel under ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.

If your puter literate you can go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools, System Configuration Utility, click on the START UP tab.
These are all the good and nasty little software monsters that start when win98 boots. If you want to shut off any of these (be careful, know what your doing before you do it) uncheck the block, apply & close. It will need a reboot.

(it's always amazed me why the VOLUME icon start up never shows in there....does anyone know if its part of the sys tray start?)
restart in safe mode (F5 while booting) then goto the device manager and check under 'modems' how many you;ve got listed there.....it's quite possible that with all the fiddling around you've managed to install more than one 'version' of your modem....well youonly want ONE so if there's mroe than one.......get rid of them ALL and start again.........

I agree with Vee90dotnet about the com port too but I'd start with safe mode and chekin your device manager modem listings.....

Guys. I couldn't thank you more. I hate that feeling when you've got to rely on some-one else to fix your problems, its a bit cack being an impatient guy.

Seriously though some great ideas. The "ghost" drivers were the problem sure enough. Thanks for all

sorry bout the points drcspy, they were rightfully yours. My mistake.

if you aint to annoyed could you have a look at wots happened now? It worked for like a day and now it crashes my whole computer if any program trys to access it in any way. Even the add-new hardware wizard, the aol connection search, the device manager, everything.
lol not annoyed at all.......

seems rather odd that it worked then started causing probs .....ah in between it 'beginning' to work and after the problems started did you install/reinstall/uninstall anythin ?
any chance you can download some updated drivers for the modem and install them?
