Question

No network connection with Hyper V Virtual Server in Windows 2008

Asked by: leadcrew

Hello Experts,

I have an eval version of Windows 2008 server running on a machine for testing and I am using the Hyper V service to run a virtual server within 2008. The virtual server is windows 2003. Both OS's are 64 bit and I was able to install both of them successfully.

However, on the virtual server I can not make a connection to the internet. In the Hyper V settings for the network card it is showing as a broadcom net extreme card (DELL server) and it is enabled on the 2008 server machine but it still fails to connect. However in the 2003 virtual server under "Manage Network Connections" the NIC does not even appear.

Evrything else seems to be running well with the exception of connecting to the internet. Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated. If there is any info I am leaving out please let me know and I will repost it.

Thanks in advance!

In Hyper-V Manager, under Virtual Network Manager, check that a virtual network has been created, if not, you would want to add a new "External" network, and select your host machine's NIC.

Back in Hyper-V manager, check the virtual machine's settings, and check that the network adapter has been added, and is pointed at your external virtual network. If not, go to "Add Hardware", and add the network adapter.

Then verify that you have installed the integration components in the virtual machine - part of this is the driver for the network card (you could also configure a "Legacy" network card in the VM settings, that does not require special drivers, but you take a performance hit).  To install the integration components, connect to the VM via the management, and go to Action>Insert integration services setup disk

after all that, if the network adapter still doesnt show up, check device manager in the VM, and you might have to find the unidentified/disabled NIC and have it search for the drivers again

Apply SP2 for Win 2003, then install the integration services on the virtual machine (Action | Insert Integration Services Setup Disk). If this does not launch automatically the Integration Services setup, go to Windows Explorer, right click on integration services and click autoplay.
The integration services will install the network adaptor

I had the same issue and found that Integration Services had not actually installed the first time, so repeated the Integration Services install and up came the NIC on the Guest Server.
