Have done the above but the Internet connection falls after about 5 minutes, very frustrating as I want to use the external NIC as the VPN gateway
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsHave installed SBS2003 network at the Office, have dual NIC with the Server NIC having a 192.168.1.150 IP Address with DNS the same but also setup with ISP DNS in the advanced tab. The external NIC which is patched into the Router has an 82.x.x.x IP Address. We have a Draytek 2820 Router with a 192.168.1.1 internal IP Address and a WAN Address. I get the network on the Internet but the connection keeps dropping and I have to run the Internet Connection Wizard each time to get it back up, because it keeps dropping I have had to revert to the single NIC for the moment but want the security of the dual NIC, any idea why this is happening.

Sounds like a physical device problem such as network adapter router or modem, or more likely DNS.
When it fails again, try connecting to a web site using the IP address such as Google http://64.233.187.99/ If this works we can assume it's DNS and go from there.
Earlier you said; "but also setup with ISP DNS in the advanced tab". Have you fixed this as per my instructions. This will break your DNS.

Your configuration needs to be changed. You can do it with 1 NIC, but if you want to use two; The internal and external (Internet facing) should be on different subnets, .i.e. both should not be on 192.168.1.x

If you change the LAN IP of the server you MUST use the "Change server IP" wizard located under server management | internet and e-mail.
The LAN card should not have a gateway address and point ONLY to itself for DNS.
The WAN card should have an IP in the same subnet as the Draytek, its gateway pointing to the Draytek, and if you enter DNS it should be the same as the LAN IP of the server.
DO NOT add the ISP's DNS IP's anywhere. These are added as forwarders in DNS but that is done automatically by running the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard", also located under server management | internet and e-mail | and called connect to the Internet, which you must now run again.
The client PC's should use DHCP, and the server, not the router should be the DHCP server.
