I have a WUSB54G v4 (looks just like the WUSB54GS, but doesn't have the 'speedbooster' function), and it has WPA2/AES support.

mine is is a v1. Maybe that has something to do with it. I contacted  Linksys support and he said it is a function of XP, with SP2. I am still experimenting, but it is time consuming and I was hoping someone would have had experience with this problem.

Did you have to download a new driver or any firmware?

Thanks

Well, yes... if you have not installed the SP3 upgrade (released 06 May 2008), you can install the WPA supplicant - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357 - but I recommend applying service pack 3.

If you have just one computer that needs SP3, use http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/; if you have multiple computers to upgrade, or the computer to upgrade doesn't have internet access, you can download an ISO image (does both Home and Pro editions) and burn it to CD... that's at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2fcde6ce-b5fb-4488-8c50-fe22559d164e

If you don't have a program (e.g. roxio or nero) to burn ISO images to CD, the site
http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm maintains a list of free programs which perform that function.

Oh... ok - I was responding to

> I contacted  Linksys support and he said it is a function of XP, with SP2.

The firmware on most adapters cannot be easily upgraded by users because they typically have less-expensive PROM or EPROM chips for the firmware instead of electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM - or 'Flash' is an Intel brand name of that type of memory) chips as most routers use.

The WUSB54GS v1 adapter supports only WEP, and it's not user upgradeable; v2 supports WPA (TKIP), but not WPA2 (AES), which requires a more powerful CPU to perform the AES encryption/decryption... WEP (and TKIP, which is a modified WEP) both employ RC4 encryption.
It appears that particular model has been discontinued, because I don't find anything newer than v2.

It looks like the approximate replacement from Linksys is the WUSB300N...  those run about $65 (street price), or $25 refurbished (e.g. http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=208179358&listingid=46510645 is the cheapest I currently find it)...  I see a couple of the reviews there complain about the extension cable and base, but it appears that seller has a reasonable return policy. That adapter has flip up antennae and an extension cable (like the WUSB54GS) with a mounting base to get it up higher if need be, but it's also small enough to plug directly into a USB port if you're using it with a laptop.

The dual-band WUSB600N would be more-versatile if you're in an urban area with lots of competiing networks (i.e. then you could switch to the 5GHz band if your router also supports it), but that one does not appear to come with a male USB-A to female USB-A extension cable nor a base that converts USB-B to USB-A.

I'm not "endorsing" those adapters, but it appears you're looking for recommendations and have not been dissatisfied with Linksys (Linksys must have been doing something right for Cisco to buy them). The WUSB54G is not advertised as being WPA2 compliant, even though the one I have connects to a router setup with a WPA2/AES passphrase. So, anyway... those are the criteria I used.

Thanks for the help. I have tried the following with the wusb54gs v1 adapter. After changing the router to wpa2, I reinstalled the adapter software  and there were two choices, wep, which wouldn't allow me to put in the new password. I think because I had upper and lower case letters, instead of all numbers.

The psk choice allowed men to put in the password and it is now working. I am going to delete the v1 and try the v4. I will keep you informed of what happens.
