Question

Internet sharing using 2 network adapters and wireless router

Asked by: jsimoa212

I have windows xp professional.
I have 2 network adapters in first one i receive internet from my provider from cable A.
I have made internet sharing on adapter 1.
On second adapter , I have cable B that is pluged into a wireless router D-link Model DI-524.

From that router , I have a cable that goes out , and its linked to a desktop computer.

I dont know what settings should I make , in order to have internet on second desktop computer , and also on a  laptop that have wireless network adapter.( I want to have internet from internet sharing)

Please notice , I DO NOT want to plug the cable from my provider , direct into the router , and from the router give internet to both desktop computer and laptop!
Thanks in advance!

On the machine with two NICs, enable Internet Connection Sharing.
On the Dlink - disable DHCP.

The other desktop and the laptop via wireless should both get IP address via dhcp from the first computer with two NICs and use it as their default gateway.

well..i have enabled internet sharing on adapter A on the first machine , plug in the provider cable to adapter A , plug in the cable from adapter B to wireless router. and started the D-link quick installation guide.
but for some reason i got this error message :

"Error: Please check the Ethernet cable connection from your PC and make sure the router is powered on."
I have my router on , both cable are connected etc ..

what should I do ?

Is it necessary to enable Internet sharing with Windows XP PC? You can enable internet sharing with D-link  DI-524. It has a WAN port.  Attach the internet providers cable into WAN port and connect your pc with other Ethernet port (disable another card in XP PC).

Did you try to set D-Link in "Gateway" mode?

by: jsimoa212Posted on 2007-07-03 at 14:56:03ID: 19415086

like i said , i dont want share internet from router.because this way the other computers will have internet anytime(even if the main computer will be switched off). What I want is to share internet from my second Ethernet card(from main computer), to the router , and from the router , to give internet through cable C to 2'nd desk computer and wireless to laptop.

"X_layer:

- i cant go into D-Link settings because when i am trying to launch installation , i got this error :

"Error: Please check the Ethernet cable connection from your PC and make sure the router is powered on."

Check the TCP/IP properties of Network card and make sure your it is set to obtain IP address automatically.

by: X_layerPosted on 2007-07-03 at 15:08:08ID: 19415162

You should look in guide, but my guess is that ip from router must be something like 192.168.1.1. Disconnect cable which goes in WAN port. Then look at connected card what is her ip.

by: jsimoa212Posted on 2007-07-03 at 15:09:43ID: 19415173

already done . I have tried with both set on automatically , than with first first (A)(with provider cable ) -automatically and second(B) with cable to the router -192.168.0.1
None of the combinations worked.

by: X_layerPosted on 2007-07-03 at 15:16:19ID: 19415202

Yes, but what is your's ip, of the card? did you get ip from router or not. If not try to manualy set ip to 192.168.0.100, and than try to access router with browser.

by: nikkonixonPosted on 2007-07-03 at 15:20:25ID: 19415215

This is a complex way of doing things but what I think you need to do is basically turn your main computer into a router. You will need to configure IP addresses on all of you computers in the same range as your main computer and also set the default gateway as the IP address of the main computer.

but i did this : setup manually the ip for the second(B) network card 192.168.0.100 , than conect the secon card to router into WAN port. Than  went to browser to http://192.168.0.100 and i got  Error!
Could not connect to remote server

by: X_layerPosted on 2007-07-03 at 15:36:53ID: 19415318

No, wrong. setup manually ip to 192.168.0.100, then connect cable to any lan port on router. Disconnect second cable for now. Then go to browser and open http://192.168.0.1

by: jsimoa212Posted on 2007-07-03 at 15:45:02ID: 19415380

Well look around, go to trough settings and look if you can set router to "Gateway" mode. I'm going to bed now, i will help you, if tomorrow still won't work.

by: pseudocyberPosted on 2007-07-03 at 15:58:46ID: 19415502

Still reading through posts, but you shouldn't have anything in the WAN port on the router.  All should be in regular switch (LAN) ports, not WAN.

by: jsimoa212Posted on 2007-07-03 at 16:07:50ID: 19415574

hmm..yes , pseudocyber i think you are right.. but in the manual it says that router have to have the internet provider cable connected to WAN  port.so i thought , that using ICS , my second network adapter will be like an internet provider in this case , and the cable from that adapter have to be plugged into WAN port of the router. :)

anyway , i think the problem is solved now , thanks X_layer

by: pseudocyberPosted on 2007-07-03 at 16:10:19ID: 19415592

Ok.  To expand on my first post ...

As I understand, you want all Internet through the "Internet PC" which is dual homed - two NICs.  You have it connected to a router/switch which is wireless to a laptop and wired to another PC.  Like this:

Internet---I'PC---Switch(Router)))))))wireless laptop
                                     |
                                   PC

First of all - you don't want the D-Link doing ANY routing at all - so forget about the WAN port.  You want it to be a wireless AP for the laptop and a switch for the other PC.  Now, by default, DHCP is probably on on the D-Link, so you ought to turn it off.  You ought to change the LAN IP of the D-Link, since by default it's probably .1  If not, that's OK.  I like the default gateway (your Internet PC) as .1 but it's really no big deal.

The easiest thing to do is to enable routing on your Internet PC by using Internet Connection Sharing.  This routes between your Internet Provider's network assigned IP (public IP) and does Network Address Translation (NAT) for you.  It's real easy.  It also turns on DHCP.  So, then your other pc and your laptop will pull IP's from your Internet PC, not your D-Link, which is good.  Then, your other machines will simply be FORWARDED to your Internet PC by the SWITCH function of your D-Link.

The cable probably didn't work on the WAN port because the NIC in the PC are both DTE wired and the switch ports (LAN) ports are DCE.

Hope this helps.

>>so i thought , that using ICS , my second network adapter will be like an internet provider in this case , and the cable from that adapter have to be plugged into WAN port of the router. :)

No, then you would be double routing and needlessly complicating things.

very useful explanation pseudocyber ! thanks once again! how can i give you some points too ??because i already gave to x layer before you posted these 2 very good answers!
