Question

How to connect CAT6 cable 4-Pairs to RJ-45 Jack Module (Faceplates)

Asked by: JatinHemant

Hi friends !

I am designing and preparing four new computer laboratories. Previously, when I was not an employee of the institute, the institute had hired one company to establish the network.

You see, they used Surface Raceways with Snap-On Faceplates. They used long blue cables which seem to be factory made quality cables. One end of those cables is connected to the switch and other end is connected to Faceplates from inside.

Now when I removed one of the Faceplates to see the internal mechanism, I was surprised. It looked very artistic work. The 4 pairs of the cables are going inside RJ-45 Jack Module and I am not able to open that Jack Module. It seems impossible for someone to make this internal connection without using some specific tools.

Please tell me&

1. Do Snap-On Faceplates come with RJ-45 Jack Module ?

2. How to connect them and what tools will be required ? And what tools will be required for this ?

Previously, I asked the same in another post but I didnt get even a singe reply. It is important question and somehow hard for me to understand without proper explanation. Please help me in this regard.

Thanks,

Hemant

If you look at the jacks in this link, they all have a color coding you follow.  In general, you want to follow the standard marked "b" as in T568B
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?Section_Id=54

See also:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIA-568B

NOTE: BOTH ends need to be wired to 568B standards or you'll have problems.  If it was done properly, then the other end of the cables is wired to a patch panel which should also be wired to T568B - if it's wired to T568A standard (unlikely) then you'll need to wire to that standard on the connector ends.  If it just goes straight to an RJ45 connector, then you want the B standard.

I think I might be confused, but when you stay Snap-On.  Are you talking about the brand or type?  I checked the Snap-On web site, I could not find any networking parts.

I find that Leviton products are easy to use and are easily available.

http://www.levitonproducts.com/?ref=MSN

The face plates and connectors are reasonably priced and available at all Home Depots.

The CAT5 and CAT6 connectors have a color coded label so you can easily insert the correct cable in each tab, and they also easily snap into the face plates.

The link below has the tool necessary for punching down the cable to the connector.

Hope this helps.

Hi leew !

Thanks for your comments. But you see, I know the TIA/EIA568A and TIA/EIA568B standards, difference between them. I know that you should use the same standard at both end for straight forward cable.

My main concern is how to connect RJ-45 Keystone to the UTP Cable's 4-pairs.

flip0110 ! I went through the link that you provided. I have seen that they provide many networking accessories. I have also gone through other websites for the same purpose. One of them is www.panduit.com. I am talking about type. Snap-On Faceplates are type not brand. Brand is Panduit. (www.panduit.com). Please see the link:

http://www.panduit.com/search/search_results.asp?Ne=1&recName=NK2HSRFIW&N=5000001+633+3001636+&region=USA

My main concern just to know the method to connect UTP Cable's pair to RJ-45 Jack because this Jack is female part (RJ-45 Connector is male part) of the connection and will go inside the faceplates. I am not talking about RJ-45 connector. I have many times made straigh-through and cross-over cables. So this is not an issue.

Thanks again for your replies..

As I indicated before - the jacks are color coded and you punch down the wires into them.

Hamant,

The CAT5 or CAT6 connectors have a color coded system on the connecter itself as LEEW described.  The link below has a blown up picture where you can see the pins themselfs.

http://www.levitonproducts.com/catalog/model_41108-R8.htm?sid=4A0517227E32A2A5427CB175FFACC917&pid=1208

A tool like the one on this link is what's used to insert each pair of cables into the connector.

http://www.levitonproducts.com/catalog/model_46666-BT.htm?sid=4A0517227E32A2A5427CB175FFACC917&pid=1208

You should know that if you only need to do a few connections you don't realy need the tool since Leviton provides you with a cheap little one to get a quick job done.

Thanks leew ! Thanks flip0110 ! Thanks for your quick replies and sorry for not replying for so long...

I explored the links provided by you. I found two or three sites that have wide range of networking product. They are 1. www.panduit.com   2. www.cableorganizer.com   3. www.levitonproducts.com (The last one is provided by flip0110 )

flip0110 ! As you told that you prefer to use leviton products, I want you to please answer my queries. As you have prepared the network, they will be easy for you to answer.

1. I used this link for Panduit Surface Raceways:
http://www.panduit.com/search/search_results.asp?N=5000001+83&Ne=1&region=USA&Nu=P_RollupKey

So, If I purchase Surface Raceways then Raceways Cover, Raceways Accessories ( i.e. Device Mounting Brackets, Snap-On Device Brackets, Hanging Boxes) and Raceways Fitting (i.e Base Coupler Fittings, Backfeed Fitting, Insert Cover, Coupler Fittings, End-Cap Fittings, Entrance End Fittings, Inside Corner Fittings, Outside Corner Fittings, Right Angle Fittings) will come with the purchase or I will have to saperately purchase these items

2. I used this link for Patch Panel:
http://www.panduit.com/search/product_details.asp?N=5000001+957+3002123+&Ne=1&region=USA&recName=DPA48688TGY

When we purchase a Wall Mount Cabinet, does it come with the Patch Panels, Cable Managers, Stands/Racks for Routers and Switches or we have to separately order for these items according to the needs ?

3. Do the Patch Panel come with RJ-45 Module Jack or we have to saperately fix them inside Patch Panels ?

leew ! It will be nice of you if you can also help me clearing these doubts.

Waiting for your replies...

Regards,

Hemant

Hello again Hamant,

Good decision on Panduit for your networking gear.  They make almost everything.

1.      Dont assume you will get any accessories in your order.  Im not 100% sure, but I did not see anything on there website that stated accessories included.  The only thing you can count on is the screws you will need to mount the equipment.

2.      Patch panels dont normally come with cabinets.  Since everyone has different requirements, patch panels are an option for your rack.  There are several different types and each come with a set amount of ports.  Also, the cable managers are sold separately.

Note: If you plan on running data networking cable you should use either Cat5e or Cat6 cables, Patch Panels, and connectors.  If you plan on running telephone cable you could use anything above Cat3.  Obviously, Cat3 modules are cheaper, but they are not rated for computer networking.

Note: When selecting a Rack you need to know what is getting racked before you buy.  If you plan on just racking a few small items and some networking switches, then a 2 post rack cabinet would be sufficient.  If you plan on racking servers, you will need a 4 post rack cabinet to support the additional weight.

Hope this helps,

Flip0110

I heartly thank both of you, flip0110 and leew.
